'I hope they have toast today' Gavin's hands read, and I looked up to read his facial expressions. He had on a big, goofy grin that stretched from ear to ear. I raised my hands and the familiar voice in my head thought of the many ways to respond to his sign. I went with something simple, since I was still tired.
'Surely they will, they know you're addicted' He waited to share the same grin Gavin had and they both burst into laughter. Well, he could feel the vibrations in his throat, and Gavin's shoulders were rocking. I could tell his throat wasn't vibrating to his voice but that's okay.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Bailey turn to me from the end of the table and her hands raise. Her hands felt for the other and slowly began sign. She wasn't the best when it came to it, because she hadn't been able to learn it from sight; but Oliver had gotten her to memorize a few phrases and words. He was still getting her to memorize the patterns of it. But that was okay, because I could read lips really well so it was like a backup.
'What's so funny you two?' Bailey asked, and I felt a chuckle rise in me from remembering it.
I placed a few fingers over my neck to feel my volume and speak, "Gavin is hoping there's toast, but I know they will because they know he loves it so much."
Oliver's body rocks itself with laughter, and followed by everyone else's.
Still snickering; I look around, being the attentive person I am, and notice a few other tables looking our way in annoyance. Well, obviously except the deaf kids. My group was abnormal to everyone else because the kids with the same disabilities stuck together and didn't really eat with other unlike them. We didn't care though, because were were a strong group. I looked to the others, seeing them happy and couldn't imagine sitting with kids similar to myself.*short timeskip*
Everyone had gotten their food, and of course Gavin got some toast, but I just went for some eggs and yogurt. I was fine with simple things.
But our attention was on Benjamin as he spoke, and did sign for me to understand. '"I really hope someone new comes in today! It'd be so exciting for there to be a new kid."'
Benjamin knew everybody, he was just easy to like. He actually was the one to make the group and bring us all together. While everyone was nodding in agreement, his eyelids flickered and not a split second later he was falling down to meet the table very fast. Oliver caught him, holding his head with one hand, and moved his plate of food ahead. Then he gently set his head down to make him look more comfortable
Poor kid, I thought, frowning at the slumped, passed out Benjamin.
Bailey started talking, as I could tell by her mouth movements. I focused, and read them carefully.
'"I've started learning morse code, I have a tutor to help me."' I read, and put a thumbs up with a smile. "Awesome." I said quietly, then looked to Benjamin again, really hoping he'd wake up again. He had fell asleep in the hall upstairs while we were walking but I managed to hold him up for a bit. I'm not really sure what they were thinking, putting a Narcoleptic upstairs. He did tell me that it was pretty full here when he came in so there wasn't much space left. That was actually how I met him a while back.
I was walking down the hall when he had come out in front of me from his room. We exchanged nods before walking the same direction I was going. I was following him down the stairs when I caught him swaying a few steps. Then he fell forwards, and I was helpless to do anything as I watched him. He hit the front of his head first and rolled down the few steps left until he sprawled on the ground- unmoving.
I had ran down and shook him, noticing a lot of blood seeping from his lips; from biting his tongue, and called for help as loud as I could that I rattled my whirling thoughts. I stayed with him, until he woke up. We conversed a little, best we could before I was told to leave. Ever since then we've been great friends, he even has a scar from where he chomped down on his tongue that day.
When I blinked the memories away, he was slowly waking up with Oliver's help to sit him up. Bailey was gently patting his shoulder too, but at least he was up. When he blinked open his eyes better, he met mine and smiled. I returned it, glad I had been there that day.
