That Could've Been Worse... right?
For the next few weeks, Diego never mentioned getting married. Which relieved me quite a bit considering that it was such a big decision. Although he was right that nothing much had changed. I thought maybe it would, but after a month it became clear that we had the same relationship we had before. Well, not including the kissing. Plus we crashed at each other's place much more frequently.
"That'll be $19.78," the pimply teen yawned as he stood in my doorway after he handed me a box of pizza. I fished a twenty out of my pocket and handed it to him.
"One sec," I mumbled as a set the pizza down to pull my phone out of my pocket. I popped off my case to reveal a ten dollar bill which I promptly handed to the kid. "Have a good night!"
"How much change do you want back? 7 dollars?"
"I don't want change," I explained. His face lit up and he smiled for the first time this delivery.
"Thanks, you're pretty generous," he waved as he turned down the hall, "Have a good night yourself!"
I smiled at him before I closed and locked the door. I carried the pizza over to my coffee table and set the box down as I checked the clock. 9:37. Diego should be arriving pretty soon so I decided to wait for him before I started eating. I curled up on the couch and turned the television on to see The Princess Bride playing. Smiling, I wrapped myself into a blanket and let my mind drift.
I was so into the movie that I didn't even hear the sound of keys unlocking my door about 15 minutes later.
"Do you ever watch anything besides this movie Sunshine?" I heard Diego ask from behind me. I didn't bother to look up.
"The pizza is getting cold," I whined as I sat up and opened the box, releasing the cheesy aroma into my apartment.
"I'm sorry Vick," he grunted as he sat on the couch next to me, "That last call was a little tougher than I anticipated."
"Well I'm sure it wasn't that b— Diego!" I had finally turned my head to see a large gash on his right shoulder. It wasn't gushing, but the blood was definitely fresh. "What the hell did you do?"
"The police radioed and said there were four thieves," he explained as I ran to the shelf by the TV to grab the first aid kit. "Turns out there was seven."
"You're an idiot," I growled as I yanked off his knife holster and reached down to pull up his shirt.
"Richards, are you undressing me? I'm flattered, but we're not married yet."
I locked my jaw in place, ignoring the use of the word yet. Distracted, I pulled his shirt up too quickly, causing Diego to flinch. "Oh! I'm so sorry love!"
He didn't respond, but he place his hand over mine and helped me maneuver the shirt over his shoulders and pull it off as gently as I could. I sucked in a breath when I saw his wound. It was about 5 inches straight across his shoulder, but luckily it didn't seem too deep.
