boat ride gone wrong

(inspired by the fact that I was just on holiday and was on a peddle boat in the sea, and I have a raging wild imagination)

"Can we please do the slide boats?" Ani practically begs. A hum of agreement goes over the group, with only one disagreement.

"I'm not really a big fan of the sea..." Alex says quietly from the back.

"Awe, come on, we don't wanna leave you." Aksel replies, turning to face him. Alex crossed his arms, looking to the ground.

"It'll be fun. Come on." Ani persuades, marching towards the boat slides in her bikini. Alex huffs, stomping behind the group.

The squad had decided to go on a holiday together to Spain. It made a nice difference from America, where they usually all met up. And for once, all eight of them had been able to come together.

"Four people per boat." The man said, pointing at his board. Hastily, they split into groups. Kwite, Henry, Diesel and Brandon in one, and Ani, Alex, Hoover and Aksel in the other.

The man led them to the boats, letting them all hop on. The boats had four seats, two for driving and two directly behind the driver's seats, back to back. The slide ran above their heads, with the ladder leaning up at the back. Kwite, Henry, Diesel and Brandon were first to get their boat.

"Come on, gym lad get in the driver's seat." Kwite said, pushing Diesel forward to the peddle seat. Brandon looked at Henry expectantly. He pulled a face.

"Ah, I get it, twinks in the back?" Brandon said, stepping into the boat. Henry shoved him in response.

"I think we have to push it?" Kwite said to Henry, as the boat sat near the shore. The water only ran to their knees.

"Start pedalling guys!" Henry shouted, placing two hands on the back. The boat wasn't really heavy, but as they moved further out, Kwite and Henry found it harder to move.

Henry hoisted himself up, holding a hand out for Kwite. They turned to see the other boat coming up next to them.

"Ayyy!" Henry shouted, leaning out of his seat behind diesel to high five Ani. They both leaned far out of their boats, about to tap hands and then a loud splash came from both boats, and Henry and Ani found themselves between the two, spluttering in the sea. They were deep now, neither able to touch the floor.

"Fucking hell!" Ani shouted, swimming back to her boat. Diesel and Brandon had stopped pedalling now, letting the boat float. Hoover and Aksel did the same, standing from the pedalling seats.

They took turns down the slides, all ending up in the sea, making sure they were withing arms distance of the boats. All except Alex.

"Come on, it's fun!" Aksel called from where he was treading water in front of the boat. So far, all Alex had done was sit in the passenger seat. "I'll catch you..." He called.

"Come on!" Henry shouted, hands on both sides of the boat beginning to rock it.

"Okay! Okay." He said loudly. Henry swam away from the edge, watching Alex shakily climb the ladder. He screamed, landing- as promised- on Aksel.

"See? Not that bad."

"I disagree." He muttered.

"Hey guys?" Diesel asked.

"Yeah?" Kwite said, floating on his back.

"We're out way too far." The edge of panic in his voice had caused everyone to look up. They were miles from the red line, where they were supposed to be. The shore seemed tiny from over here.

"Oh my god." Alex said.

"Quick! Get onto the boats!" Aksel shouted with urgency. He grabbed Alex's arm, tugging him over to the boat. He helped him up, and then climbed up himself. They were the closest to the boat.

Aksel held out his hand and pulled Ani and Hoover up.

Henry had scrambled up the side of the boat, not even using the back, where he was supposed to go, in his urgency. Diesel was already pulling himself into the pedalling seat and Brandon was helping push Kwite onto the boat.

Turning the boats around was the first main issue. The turn handle was loose and not quick at all. They had drifted even further out to sea by the time they had turned even half the way. They were loosing sight of shore now.

Just their luck, as both boats were turned sideways on in the sea, a big wave began to come towards them.

"Shit." Brandon said.

"Everyone grab onto something." Diesel shouted. Everyone did, grabbing onto the metal poles, seats, anything. Kwite, unfortunately, didn't grab tight enough. The wave hit, sending everything in the air. Kwite let go and fell into the sea, struggling against the current.

"Kwite! KWITE!" Brandon started shouting, once the wave had passed. He still hadn't resurfaced. Brandon was clinging to the ladder, looking everywhere. Finally, it seemed, he came to the top, gasping for air. He looked around for a minute, spotting the boats floating away from him and hurriedly swam towards his. Brandon had outstretched his hand, still shouting his name. He grabbed on, pulling himself up. Once he had, he curled into a ball on the small amount of space they did have, coughinh up water. He spluttered, gagging and retching.

"Fuck! Kwite, are you okay?" Henry turned in his seat to look at his friend. He nodded hesitantly.

"I can't see the shore anymore." Alex mumbled quietly. Aksel turned his head to look at him, and then realised he was right. Everywhere he looked was blue. He did a full 360 turn, just to check.

"So we're lost? In the middle of the ocean?" Ani asked. A silence rippled over the group.

"I think so." Diesel mumbled in reply.

They sat in silence for a while, stunned into shock. Ani's boat drifted away a bit, warning everyone on that boat that they were about to be separated.

"We should figure out a way to connect the boats. Stick together." Alex said.

"Yeah? And how the fuck do we do that?" Hoover groaned.

"Back at the beach, some of the boats were connected at the front." Diesel said. "The ones no one was using. Maybe there's a latch or something."

Henry peered over the side of the boat, unable to see the front.

"I'll check." He replied, standing.

"Woah buster, the waters deep here." Brandon stated, grabbing his arm.

"No shit. It's the middle of the ocean. I don't plan on walking on the sea floor, Brandon." He tugged his arm and sat on the edge, lowering himself in. He swam to the front of the boat, looking for a latch. He found a long plastic stick protruding, with a hole and stuck up end. "I think I found it, someone come in and help me connect."

Soon enough the two boats were connected, facing each other. It didn't help the fact that they were still floating in the ocean, though.

Hoover yawned, stretching his arm out. "I'm tired." He said, mid yawn.

Come to think of it, the rest of the group were also tired. All the pedalling, swimming, panic, had made them knackered.

Brandon sat on the floor of the plastic boat, his back against the slide ladder, and closed his eyes.

"You're going to sleep?" Kwite asked incredulously.

"Not like there's much else to do." Henry snickered, putting his arms behind his head and stretching out.

"Woah. What a weird dream." He hummed, eyes opening to blue water.
