The last thing Philip wanted was to attend the spring gala. All he wanted to do was to focus on keeping his mother's legacy alive until he became King and further, not to chat with nobles and dance with every candidate his father had for him to marry.
From a corner, he saw the whole scene between Damien and Amber. He even tried to stop Damien from going after her but he didn't listen.
"Hey!" someone grabbed his wrist, spinning him around.
It was her... Avery.
She looked beautiful in her ivory ball gown, which complemented her olive skin and her ash brown hair; his eyes looked for her everywhere without even realizing it. He had never been captivated by anyone in particular and he had no idea how to handle it.
"What are you doing here?" he inquired.
"Stopping you from intruding on their privacy."
"They can't be together and he knows it."
"Okay, that's low even coming from you. But don't worry because your brother is not as conceited as you are, and in my opinion, they're going to be just fine."
Damien had always been the life of the party, whereas, Philip was dedicated to his duty just like his father. After his mother died, he didn't find joy in anything else but his studies and becoming a King his people would be proud of.
"Be careful with what you say," he warned, taking a step forward.
"Or you'll throw me in the dungeon, Your Highness?"
"Don't test me, Miss Llyn," his eyes focused on her brown ones.
By now, they were close enough to kiss but as he leaned in, fireworks exploded in the sky, making them scoot away from each other.
They watched the display from the window next to them but he soon found more interest in watching how her smile lighted up her whole face.
She grabbed his hand and he froze momentarily, but then relaxed and intertwined their fingers; enjoying the warmth he felt inside. They had met a few days ago and somehow; she was all he could think about lately.
She turned to him after the firework display ended and with a sincere look on her face she said, "Your brother needs your support."
"What do you mean?"
He never showed it, but he cared deeply for Damien, who reminded him so much of their mother.
"It's not my place to say," she replied, before kissing his cheek and leaving.
What is she doing to me? He asked himself when she was gone.
