The moment Will and I stepped out of the shadows into my father's throne room, a figure just next to the throne leapt up and smoothed her chiton. It took me a second to recognize her, but the polecat on her shoulder gave it away.
"Lady Hecate," I said, bowing deeply. Will followed suit behind me, adding on a quick "Lord Hades." "What can we do for you?"
"It appears that Hecate's little experiment has gotten out of hand," Dad interjected, glaring at the goddess of magic.
"Well, yes, but they can yet be saved," Hecate said defensively. "A few have just been... misguided. I need the two of you to protect the boy who is destined to save them from disaster."
She looked like we were supposed to understand that.
It seemed Will shared my confusion. "I'm sorry, what are you talking about? What experiment? What sort of disaster?"
Hecate sighed. "A few thousand years ago, I blessed a group of mortals with magic. These magic users, called wizards, developed a complex society of their own, and now there is a whole civilization for them, with a ministry and several schools.
"Of course, there were some who wanted more power, and they were led by one particularly powerful wizard by the name of Tom Riddle, more commonly known as Lord Voldemort. He was determined to overthrow the government, enslave mortals, and achieve immortality. 15 years ago, a prophecy was issued that told of a boy who was destined to defeat Voldemort. A year after this boy was born, he broke into the infant boy's house, killed his parents and attempted to kill him, but the curse was reflected back onto Voldemort." She paused, waiting for nods of understanding from the both of us, before continuing.
"After that, Voldemort was reduced to almost nothing and forced to live his days surviving off of unicorn blood. He has been planning his return, and something tells me it will be this year. I need the two of you to protect the boy from the prophecy, a fourteen-year-old named Harry Potter, from what is to come." Hecate clasped her hands together nervously.
"Alright. Where do we need to go?" Will asked, seeming excited at the prospect of diving into such an unfamiliar world.
"You will be going to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry in England as students from Olympus Academy for the Magically Specialized, to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. There is more information in your letters, but for now you must pack before I send you off." Hecate handed us two thick manilla envelopes. She then drew back beside the throne to wait.
Hades stepped forward. "You two know the drill. Just pack the essentials, meet us back here when you're done. Hecate will bless you with magic when you get back, then transport you to where you will be staying until the school year starts. Go on now, be quick." Dad gave me a quick hug, then turned to Will, offering a hand to shake. Will took it quickly.
"Ah, William, good luck with your... project," Dad said, almost chuckling under his breath. I glanced at my boyfriend, and noticed he was studying the floor, blushing like a tomato. Huh. Oh well, if it's important, he'll tell me himself. I squeezed Will's hand to get his attention before once again dragging us into the shadows.
