Pumping Music. Strobe lights. Fog getting in my eyes. Just what a typical night for me looks like at Canvas Nightclub. Sitting right in the heart of Brooklyn, my nights working as a waitress have me coming into contact with a wide variety of people. The tips are alright though and are one of the only redeeming qualities of the job.
The worst part is the tight short, almost non-existent dress I'm forced to wear. My boss Pauly thinks that people have a tendency to spend more money when the waitresses are half dressed, his brilliant idea...not mine.
"Okay a Corona and a gin and tonic, I'll be right back with that."
I tell the customers and walk over to the bar. One more hour and then it's last call and I can go home. My feet ache and I just want to sleep. Breathe Liz. I need this job. I need this job. If I get fired for being rude to the customers, I'm going to get evicted because rent is due this week. This a decent paying job, who cares about what I have to deal with for just a few hours a night.
"Liz baby, come here," Pauly drunkenly exclaims from the corner of the club.
Does he not know you shouldn't get drunk while on the job? I timidly walk over to him because he's practically slobbering in his mouth. There is something about Pauly that rubs me the wrong way, but I just try to ignore him as much as possible. He's just a little creepy, that is all that's wrong with him.
"I need you here at ten tomorrow." He demands. I'm not scheduled to work tomorrow, and I got things to do. Plus, my feet are going to be hurting from running around all of tonight.
"Pauly I'm not scheduled for tomorrow and I already made plans, sorry." I try to sound sincere, but it is coming across as unapologetic.
Pauly stands up to face me and pulls me closer to him. I try to put more space between us, but he is not allowing it. With grey balding hair and a beer gut, he's a sight for sore eyes, and it's not like his personality makes up for it.
"I'm having a few friends in tomorrow and the club is going to be closed for the event. I need my best girl in." I try to start to get out of it, but he cuts me off.
"I don't care if you have plans tomorrow, change them. If you're not in tomorrow at ten, you can find yourself another job." He says with a toothless grin and pats me on the cheek.
I nod at Pauly and his eyes run up and down me as I go back to the bar so I can grab the customers' drink. Last thing I want to do is waitress a party of old, creepy, dudes that are all like Pauly, but I guess I'm going to have to.
The night is over soon enough and it's time for me to go home. I leave the club and begin to walk home. It's three in the morning and just warm enough that I'm not freezing while walking. I love end of August weather.
I walk on the barely lit street and it's eerily quiet for a Saturday night, it's unnerving really. Typically, the streets on a Saturday are full of semi drunk people who are stumbling home but tonight seems different. It's like the whole city has vanished. I don't even hear the typical sirens.
All of a sudden, I hear a trash can tip over and it echo's in the street, my first real sign that something is terribly wrong. I look over to the alley and no one is there.
I begin to quicken my pace at the feeling that someone is watching me. I feel my heart race out of my chest as I see my building coming up on my right. I quickly open the door to my building and get in the elevator. As I watch the elevator doors close, I breathe a sigh of relief. That was weird. My neighbourhood is relatively safe, so I typically never feel like that, but I guess this is New York. Perhaps I was just overreacting. A rat probably just tipped over the garbage can and my sleep deprived brain is making more out of it than it is.
I try to rationalize what just happened as I walk into my apartment. I calm myself down and tumble into bed but can't shake the dark pit in my stomach that tells me this isn't random.
That it's just the beginning.
