WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT DEAD MAN?

Cassie had called and according to her, some witch hunters had circled her house with ashes and salt, making it the best place to attack a defenseless witch.
Even though she'd said everything was fine, my eyes couldn't stop wandering to her as she laughed with Adam.

''She said she could take care of herself. You think that's true?'' I asked Faye and Melissa but as expected, only the latter one answered.

''I don't know. She seems strong enough and she's got individual magic. Keeping an eye on her seems like the last thing you should do.''
She sent me a pointed look over her cup and I watched as Cassie strolled to another table and set down the drinks the students had ordered.

''Look, Mel, I appreciate the concern,'' I turned back to her and narrowed my eyes into slits. ''But I need to figure exactly what's going on and who knows? Maybe that ring was cursed into creeping the hell out of its owners?''

Melissa sent me an incredulous look and raised her eyebrows as Faye scoffed beside me.
''What you need to do is to tell the circle.''

''I can't do that!'' I shot back abruptly as my upper arm snapped closer to her, ''Just, look at them,'' we both turned back to Cassie who smiled at Adam as he walked out of the Java Brew. ''One life threatening situation is enough. I refuse to include them into more danger, especially while I'm not sure exactly what it is we're up against.''

''You told me,'' another glance up from her cup and she hurried her nose inside of it.

''No,'' I pointed a finger on my right, ''Faye told you.''

''Hey!'' The Chamberlain girl perked up, ''Melissa would have found out anyway. You know how curious she is. Besides,'' Faye poured sugar into her cup, so much that I wondered if the thing was still coffee at all anymore, ''the more who know, the better. You know what they say, when the ouija board points to something, you should follow it in pairs.''

''Literally nobody says that. But I just don't want to include anymore people. At least not right now. Let me find out more about it and-''
''If what Lucy said about that Louis Leblanc is true, then the ring directly connects to Cassie's dad!''

''I know that, Melissa,'' I pinched the bridge of my nose and scoffed, leaning farther into the booth.
''But with everything going on, I want to be sure,''
Faye scoffed but I didn't let her interrupt me further, ''I'm thinking of maybe telling Diana but no one else. Not Cassie, not Adam and not-''
''Jake?''

My eyes met Melissa's over her cup and I tried to remain still and unbothered.
''Yes, Jake.''

Adam somehow hadn't left just yet and walked passed our booth to leave the café.
I sent him a quick nod and all the girls at the table acted as if we were not just talking about him.

Once he left, a silence ensued that Faye was the first to break.
''The queen bee serving me a latte on bent knees, life is good!'' She put the sugar away and shrugged in my
direction. ''Aren't you going to order something?''
