Paige's POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night, I practically slept with my phone. And the night after that. And a whole month after that. I didn't call him and he didn't call me. Then, about a month into our official break up, I got a call from Coach Reynolds. He asked me if I wanted to come down for a practice with the boys.
"I don't really think I'm in the mood, Coach."
"Shortie and Duke told me that you've been moping around for the past month. You need to face him, once and for all. I know it's hard, it always is at first. Plus, I think this will help. We're going to do some scrimmaging today and I've got a special spot open on the defensive line!"
"You don't mean..."
"Yes I do."
"I'll be there in five."
He chuckled as I hurriedly hung up the phone. I threw all the crap I needed into my gym bag and rushed down to the stadium. As I got to the entry gate, I saw Andrew. And another girl. He bent down to kiss her and I squeezed my eyes shut. I opened my eyes, expecting them to be done but they weren't. I walked right past them and they didn't even notice.
"Hey Coach!" I said as I walked past him on the way to the empty girl's locker room.
"Hey Shortie, Hey Duke!"
"Hey Paige!"
I walked into the locker room and quickly changed. I put all of my gear on and held my helmet. This was going to be fun. I took a deep breath and walked out onto the field. Shortie waved me over to him, but before I could get there, Coach grabbed me.
"Don't break any of his bones, okay?"
"Okay."
"But give him as many bruises as you like."
I grinned. "Shouldn't be a problem, Coach."
He patted me on the shoulder and sent me on my way. I walked over to Shortie.
"Coach told you what we're doing today?"
"Yep."
"And what positions?"
He asked trying to look inconspicuous.
I nodded. I saw Andrew walking towards us.
"Quick fake laugh." Shortie hissed at me.
We both laughed as Andrew walked up to us.
"That was a good one Shortie!" Andrew pretended like I wasn't even there as he spoke to Shortie.
"You're my tight end today, right?" Shortie rolled his eyes and nodded. Then he walked away. Just like that. Without even acknowledging me.
"What a jerk." Shortie said. Coach blew his whistle. Game time. I ran over to the defensive huddle that Duke was creating. He said the names of a couple of plays we were doing but I wasn't even listening. I had one objective. Beat the crap out of Andrew. I came back to earth when I heard my name.
"Paige is only here to knock some sense into Andrew, just like we talked about."
All the guys chuckled. Apparently, Andrew had been an absolute jerk to everybody since he broke up with me. A group of the guys actually asked Coach if I could come and beat the crap out of him. We put our helmets on and got into the lineup. I barely heard Andrew say hike and we were off. I sprinted toward Andrew and tackled him with all the strength that I had.
"Quarterback down. Let's go again." I shouted to Coach.
I heard him laugh off in the distance as we lined up again. I did the same thing over and over and over for the entire practice. After the last time I tackled him, Andrew grunted as he propped himself up on his elbows. He held his hand up to me to help him up. Not entirely coldhearted, I helped him up.
"Meet me outside after practice." He whispered in my ear. I glared at him, but agreed. When I arrived outside, Andrew was already waiting for me.
"What do you want?" I asked him.
"I want to know why you showed up for practice today."
"Coach invited me to practice today! He wanted me to-"
Andrew cut me off.
"Listen. I have a girlfriend now."
"I noticed." I said as I rolled my eyes.
"You cheated on me."
"No, I didn't. I swear! I would never cheat on you!"
"You cheated on me with Shortie."
I clenched my teeth together. "No. I. Didn't."
"Stop lying to me."
"I'm not! Your mother is lying to you!"
"Just SHUT UP!" Andrew shouted at me.
I shut up and raised an eyebrow at him.
"Just go away. Get out of my life. I never want to see your face again."
With that, he stormed away.
"Drama queen." I muttered to myself as I headed back to my dorm. I had some trouble unlocking the door through the haze of tears blurring my vision. I dropped my keys on my desk and held my face in my hands. I was feeling a little bit dizzy and there was a dull pain in my stomach. I gasped as the pain grew from dull to sharp and everything went black.
