Michael sighed, closing the door as Jeremy left. They had just ended one of their many late night hangouts, and Michael had been a nervous wreck almost the whole time. In the hours they'd spent together that night, Jeremy had told Michael that Christine not only broke up with him, but Jeremy was also bi. Not to mention he and Christine broke up because Jeremy liked someone else, Jeremy's crush being someone who, when Michael had asked, 'Michael had never met'. Now Michael was alone in his basement, flipping through the list of karaoke songs he could perform to drown out his misery. He finally found one to reflect his mood, and started the instrumental. Meanwhile, Jeremy slowly crept back into the house, having realized earlier that he'd forgotten his phone. He paused at the stairs when he heard a familiar voice singing.
When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
Michael thought about how nervous he'd been the whole night.
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so very special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What am I doing here?
I don't belong here
Michael remembered how Jeremy had called him a loser at the Halloween party. A small part of him always remembered that sentence, telling him it was true. He continued singing, half of him singing for the sake of it, half of him now feeling closer and closer to the song.
I don't care if it hurts
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so very special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What am I doing here?
I don't belong here, oh, oh
He's running' out the door
He's running' out
He's run, run, run, run
Run
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so very special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't belong here...
Michael stopped singing, going to plug his phone in. When he turned around, however, he just saw Jeremy standing on the bottom step, staring at Michael in awe. Michael froze, staring at Jeremy with wide eyes. Jeremy copied Michael's expression, and finally, Jeremy spoke.
"I uh... I forgot my- my phone," he said awkwardly, pointing towards the table, where his phone sat. Michael nodded, blinking and handing Jeremy his phone.
"That song... who does it remind you of?" Jeremy asked, a light pink dusting across his face. Michael felt his heart ready to explode inside his chest.
"Whaddya mean? I was just singing for the heck of it," Michael tried to brush it off casually.
"Michael. I'm able to tell when you're acting and when you actually mean something. Who was it about?" Jeremy persisted. Michael felt his face growing pale.
"It wasn't anyone Jeremy. Please don't make me do this," Michael pleaded. Jeremy looked into Michael's eyes, the look inside begging for an answer. Michael sighed, slumping down into a bean bag, his head in his hands.
"Okay fine... The person I was thinking about was... it was you," Michael explained, his face still in his hands.
"You think I'm that special?" Jeremy asked, his eyes wide and his face reddening significantly.
"Of course I do. How could I not? Just look at yourself," Michael said, refusing to face Jeremy.
"How could you think you're a creep?" Jeremy further questioned, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Ever since the Halloween Party... Ever since that stupid computer pill came into your life, I just can't shake the feeling that what you said in Jake's bathroom was true. Maybe I was just jealous that you were popular. That you weren't my friend anymore. Maybe I was the loser..." Michael sighed, too tired to really care about what he was saying. Jeremy, however, was listening intently, holding onto Michael's every word.
"I mean, should I have just let you keep your SQUIP?" Michael asked, now looking at his lap, appearing as though he was asking himself this question, rather than Jeremy.
"You were popular. You and Christine would have been together. Everyone would have been happier, right?"
"NO!" Jeremy shouted, a look of horror taking over his features. Michael finally looked up at him in surprise.
"Please don't say things like that. The SQUIP did horrible things to anyone that had one. I mean, look at what happened to Rich!! He set his best friend's house ON FIRE!" Jeremy panicked, trembling as he remembered all the shocks and verbal abuse he'd endured. Michael's eyes widened as he remembered what Jeremy had told him.
"I'm sorry, Jere. I didn't mean it like that. I just worry that I messed up somehow. I would never consider putting anyone through that kind of torture, especially not you," Michael apologized, walking over to the still-shaking Jeremy. Michael engulfed Jeremy in a hug, resting his chin on the top of Jeremy's head. Jeremy buried his face in Michael's hoodie, clutching onto the person in front of him.
"I think you're special too..." Jeremy whispered, pulling himself closer to Michael. Michael merely hummed in response, just wanting to hold Jeremy like this for the rest of his life.
"That guy that I had a crush on. The one that you'd never met. He's you. Just thought you ought to know that," Jeremy said quickly, hiding his face in Michael's chest once more. Michael chuckled, relaxed and happy that Jeremy felt the same way he did.
