It was rare that Aziraphale ever slept. That night was one of them. He dozed of as he read in one of his newly acquired chairs, keeping an eye on the sleeping Eve. It didn't feel right to him to let her out of his sight. But when the angel woke up the blankets were misplaced, and the girl was no where to be seen, along with the crutch.
The angel got up and frantically stated looking around. "Eve!" he called out. She was no where in the flat.
"I'm down here," she softly called out from downstairs. The angel rushed down, worried about what happened to her. Nothing bad, she was sitting down on the ground near his desk, a few book sitting by here, and the mess on his desk gone. Instead there were a few piles of books on the floor beside the desk.
Aziraphale let out a sigh in relief of the girls safety. The girl looked up with him with a proud smile. " I hope you don't mind," she started sifting around to get back onto her foot. "But I organized you books, alphabetical by title, I couldn't find authors on most of them. I was gonna put them on a shelf, but they're all full."
"Maybe I do have too many books," he realized. It had been something Crowley had been pointing out for decades.
The girl frantically shook her head, displacing her balance in her foot. "There's no such thing," she disagreed.
Aziraphale smiled. He had yet to meet someone that loved books almost as much as he had. "What's your favorite book then, Eve?"
Eve stuck out her lip on thought. Aziraphale was expecting for a book he'd never heard of, something made to teach young humans how to read. "The Oddessy," Eve said simply after much thought.
Aziraphale was surprised. This child was odd, jntelegent and polite, nothing he experienced with other human children. "How old are you Eve?" he asked out of curiosity.
"I turned five last month," she said, clocking her head on confusion.
Aziraphale didn't know what he was expecting. A child that age would be able to even comprehend most of the words in the Oddessy, let alone Magic Tree House. Yet Eve said it was her favorite, while also managed to run away, with injuries, and being decently prepaired.
The bell of the shop opened, frightinging the two. Aziraphale had locked it the night before after Crowley left. "Angel," the familiar voice of the demon rang out, "The lod awake yet?"
He stepped through the doorway to see the subject of his entrance standing thet, balancing on foot and crutch. "We can take her to the police now," he declared.
"What!?" both declared in surprise and concern.
Eve turned to look at the demon, with pleading eyes. "Please Mr. Crowley. I don't want to go back to live with Granny. She hates me."
He crouched down to be eye level with the kid, giving her a soft smile. "You should go to your family. Nothing good will come from being around us," he told her, a bit of annoyance forced into his voice.
You could just see all the hope and joy drain from her face. She face the ground and went completely still. "I'll go gather your things," Aziraphale said, unsure what to do about the sudden sadness coming from the girl.
"I don't want to go," she repeated, it was almost a mumble. "I'll just leave again."
Crowley was put in an awkward situation. This entire thing was new to him. Warlock had pretty much listened to what he told him to do. This girl was more reblous and stubborn than that. "I'll make a deal ith you," Crowley sighed, giving in, "If you go back to live with your Granny, you can come back and visit."
Eve stood there, in thought. Her fingers played with the edging on the sling. "Alright..." she said half heartedly.
Little did they kno that one agreement would change there loves. It wouldn't be quite as soon as you'd hope, six weeks, four days, and forty five minuets away to he exact. It seemed far at the moment, but in the future it be far too short.
Crowley carries Eve into the police station, annoyed at how slow she went on the crutches. Aziraphale followed after, the girl's bag in his hand. "We found a kid," Crowley said, setting Eve down on the counter, still clad in her pajamas.
The officer behind the desk looked at the odd treo. "I'll get someone to check missing persons," they said, slowly walking away into the office area behind the counter.
Eve was frantically checking everywhere, her eyes just couldn't settle on one place to look. Her shoulder where stiff, and her legs crossed, trying to become smaller. She was obviously in discomfort.
Aziraphale scooped her off the counter and placed her on the ground, sure she was soundly balancing in her crutch. "It's alright Eve, you're going home." She said nothing but continued to glance everywhere like a frightened puppy, slowly inching closer to the angel.
Soon a police officer came up to them, a notepad in hand. He had bags under his eyes, and balding hairline he tried to hide under a hat." So there's the young one," he said, trying to be cheery, as not to frighten the young girl. His attempts did not work, as she just got closer to the angel.
The officer came around from the counter, and squatted down to be eye level with Eve. He only got a glare, as she shuffled to hide behind Aziraphale. "What's your name?" the officer asked, to refiece no answer.
"She told us her name was Eve," Crowley said, getting annoyed by the child's unwilliness to cooperate.
While a short little name would work to call the girl if she was in another room, it wouldn't work to find out all her information. For that they need the full complication of a name given to her at birth. It did not help she was to frightens by the officer to say it.
"It's alright," Aziraphale assured the girl, placing a hand on her back, "The officer will help you get home. You don't need to be scared." The thought of home replace some fear on the girls face with annoyance.
With a single glance from the demon Eve rembered their agreement. With a soft sigh she spoke, "Godeleve Lox."
