Penny's brother

Penny's brother.

I felt as if my heart had stopped. The eyes, the hair, the height, and the smile—they all resembled Penny. The only thing that was slightly off was Xander's voice; it was a British accent. He had the same darkness in his eyes as Penny did.

Penny never told me anything about his past. He told me he didn't know where he was born; he didn't know where he lived growing up, he didn't know his family. He told me he grew up in Derry his entire life, besides the few months as a child that he couldn't remember.

"Your brother?" I looked at Penny, he was already looking at me with a stone-cold face. He knew he had lied to me, but I had no intention of assuming why. "You never bothered to mention that you knew of your family?"

Penny looked to his feet, soon turning away from Xander and me. "I didn't think it was important." Penny made his way to the kitchen,

I frowned, walking past Xander as I followed behind Penny. He reached the kitchen table, sitting down as he put his elbows on the wooden surface. He placed his face in his hands.

"Knowing a part of who you are seems pretty important to me," I responded to him. Penny looked up from his hands, his eyes meeting mine. He began to stand up, making his way over to me.

He looked down at me. "Ariana, there are many, many things that I could tell you that would be more important than explaining who my brother is."

"Please do tell her, Penny." Xander moved around us, sitting in a chair as he put an elbow on the table, his hand holding up his face in astonishment. I eyed Xander, feeling conscious about what the two of them were hiding.

"I hate you." Penny turned around, murmuring to Xander.

"Why? I'm quite lovely." His accent stuck out. Penny and I ignored Xander, grabbing hold of Penny's face as I gave him a questioning expression. His eyes locked with mine, his back now turned towards his brother.

"What other things?" I asked Penny, referring to what he had told me only moments before. Penny sighed heavily, looking the opposite of my direction. "What haven't you told me?"

"Sweetheart, would you like me to explain?" Xander asked. My eyes wandered to his brother, a feeling of anxiety washing over me. What was I missing? "Sit, darling."

I hesitated for a split second. Every ounce of information being thrown at me was incredibly uneasy; it was like the wind was being knocked out of me.

Penny, my Penny, has a brother. A brother who is a narcissistic douchebag. Not only did he forget to mention him, but he also left out everything else about himself, to begin with.

I moved my way around Penny, my shoulder accidentally hitting his. Some might have taken that as some sort of threat or a way to express how much they hated them. Here's the thing; I didn't want Penny thinking that I hated him, but something about this conversation with Xander was going to take some sort of turn. I had a gut feeling, and judging by the way Xander was looking at me, this wasn't going to end well for me.
