Athena's pov

I get off my horse Stormy and put her back in her stall. "Good girl" I scratch under her chin "I'll see you later, okay?" I kiss her nose lightly then head back inside after double checking I did all my chores

I take a quick shower and change then go downstairs "Papa?" I call out. My dad Diego is at work.

"Over here darling" I hear him say from the kitchen, I start walking towards him "I'm cooking your favorite" He smiles when he sees me "Ooo, smells good" I smile back and sit down at the island in the kitchen "so, dad wants me to call my mom... "

"I think you should too" He says

"I'm just scared she won't want to hear from me" I explain

"I bet she does Athena, she's your mother. You should have seen the look in her eyes when she handed you to me and your father. I could tell your mother was a good woman she just couldn't take care of you. She just wanted you to grow up in a happy family. And I bet she wants to know how you're doing. You've grown into an amazing woman. You're beautiful, talented, smart, funny... you're everything every girl wants to be. She would be proud to know that." He makes two plates of food.

"Thank you... " tears slip from my eyes. He comes over and sets a plate in front of me "Eat" He wipes my tears away. We eat in silence, when I'm done I ask to be excused. I set my plate and fork in the dish washer and head up to my room. I sit at my desk as I dial the number

I sit there for a moment before hitting call. I hold it up to my ear. It picks up on the fourth ring

"Hello?" A woman's voice answers "Hey... CanI speak to Kara Sanchez?" I ask "This is she. Who's this?" She says I take a moment to build up courage to speak "um... My name is Athena Martinez, I'm your... daughter" I nervously bite my nail. She stays silent for a moment. "I understand if you don't want to hear from me. It's-" She cuts me off "No, no, no... it's just i've been waiting to hear from you for so long." She laughs  "Really?" Im honestly surprised by her response. 

"Yes really! How are you?" I can hear her crying on the other end of the phone. "I'm doing good" I say "That's great, I'm so glad to hear that." She says "Would you maybe want to FaceTime? " I want to know what she looks like. "Yes, I would love that!" She says "Okay" I switch it over to FaceTime. So does she. The first thing I notice is her eyes, they're just like mine.

"You're so gorgeous Athena" Kara smiles "I have your eyes" I smile back at her "And my nose" She laughs "you look just like me... Gosh you're so pretty." 

"Aw, thank you Kara" I smile

"So tell me something about yourself, how's school?" She asks, of course she asks about school, like why is that everyones first question "I graduated about a week ago." I say "Wow, congratulations sweetie" She says

"Thank you" 

Kara and I  have been on the phone for about an hour now

We've talked mostly about me. I've told her about the ranch and my horse, I talk about my fathers and tell her they're really supportive, I tell her I can sing and play the piano, I tell her I'm a huge book nerd.

"So, do you think you would like to come up to Minnesota for a couple days? I would love to get to spend some time with you and maybe get to know each other better." I hesitate my response, thinking if i'm ready to meet the woman who gave me up in person. I still haven't really gotten over that yet and I don't think that I ever fully will, but Kara seems nice, and I think that I want to eventually. "Yeah, I think that would be great. I would love to get to spend some time with you. Just us, you know girl time" I laugh "but I would have to work things out with my dads first and then book plane tickets and get money for everything" 

"Okay sweetie, I need to go and get ready for work, but I'm so glad you said yes and just let me know what your dads say." We hang up the phone and I go downstairs to talk to my dads about mine and Kara's plans. It's about 5:30pm so my dads off of work.

I sit on the couch with them and explain to them how she wants me to come up. "We wouldn't be able to come, I need to stay here and take care of the horses and your dad has to work" My papa explains "That's okay, I just really want to go" I plead "Well, we have some spare rainy day money.. I think we might be able to make that happen." My dad looks over at my papa then back towards me. "Really?!" I jump off the couch and onto both of them "thank you, thank you, thank you!" I squeal "You're welcome" They both laugh hugging me back

"So, when can I leave?" I ask pulling away "Well, we'll have to buy a plane ticket for there and back, I'll look into that soon" My dad says "Okay, sounds good" I smile. We sit there and talk for a little while

I go out and do my nightly chores then take a shower and head to bed.
