It was weird, before Devyn and I could even announce that we were in a relationship everyone was saying congratulations. I looked at Devyn accusingly but he only shrugged his shoulders, like he didn't have a clue how everyone had figured it out. Sonia had just finished teasing us and had moved on towards the house where Trisha was yelling out that dinner was ready.
Devyn and I took our time, not because we wanted to be alone but because we were trying to ready ourselves for the jibes and jokes that were waiting for us on the other side of the door. If Declan started up with everyone else I would probably have something to say, but Devyn tried to tell me that this is what country people did whenever two people got together.
"Awe, there's the lovely couple now!" Adrian bellowed and begun trumpeting the song that accompanied most brides down the table, glaring at him I turned to Declan, ready to yell at someone for being stupid.
"If anyone says one more thing about this you'll be sh*tting dinner out your *ss for the next week, got it?" I probably shouldn't have been so hasty with my threat, Trisha looked like she wanted to scold me, and Declan looked a little torn between laughing and frowning and Adrian's laughter roared through the dining room as he slapped his hand down on the table.
Everyone else gathered at the table didn't say a peep as I sat down next to Valerie and Devyn sat next to Adrian. I think I felt sorrier for him at that moment; Adrian was his teacher so he didn't want to anger him but he was just as sick of all the teasing as I was. The only difference being I was free to speak up about it and he wasn't as much.
Adrian continued on with the teasing so much that Trisha had to force him from the table, every second breath was him saying something about Devyn and I. I think the last straw was when he hinted at Devyn and I sleeping together, it wasn't something I had thought about and it certainly wasn't something I wanted to think about while eating dinner. By the look on everyone else’s faces I think it was then that they realized Adrian had gone too far.
"Seriously Trisha? It was a joke...ya can't kick me out because of that?" Adrian tried to defend himself, but I think deep down he knew as well that he had crossed the line.
"It's not just that Adrian, you're drunk as a skunk and you know how I feel about drunks in my house, now get out of here. Go sleep it off and when you get up in the morning it better be with an apology to everyone here." I thought Adrian would argue with Trisha a bit more but he hung his head, nodded and left the dining room quietly as everyone else tried to carry on eating.
After dinner, Devyn and I decided to sit out on the porch swing for a little bit. "You wouldn't think Trisha and Adrian are siblings, would you?" I was surprised and turned my attention fully to Devyn, expecting him to spill all without my having to say anything.
"Yeah, they have the same parents and all that, but even though Trisha is married and a Gallers now she and Adrian never shared the same surname. Her mom and dad split when they were young, her dad took Adrian and raised him down in Texas I think, Trisha was raised here in Montana. Adrian used to have a drinking problem when he showed up years ago, I remember him always being the stumbling bum down in town whenever my mom took us shopping." I couldn't really imagine Adrian being a drunk, aside from tonight I'd never ever seen him let his guard down. It made me wonder a little why tonight of all nights he had decided to drink to excess.
"That's so weird, I kinda feel sorry for Adrian though. I mean, especially considering his mom and sister was all the way up here, was it just him and his dad in Texas? I wonder why he was an alcoholic." It was something I would probably be asking myself for the rest of my life, Adrian was an okay guy when he wasn't drunk or drinking but he wasn't easy to make conversation with either.
Aside from the time he had tried to teach me to tie a knot he hadn't approached me or even spoken to me again. I didn't mind but if I wanted my questions answered I would probably need to wheedle my way into his good books and figure him out just a little bit more. It seemed like too much work though and I could just imagine myself asking him outright.
"Yeah, it's kind of like you though...minus the drinking." I agreed, though left out the fact that I did drink. Not all the time and not to the point that I could barely keep my mouth shut, but I did drink.
"So tell me more about this rodeo thing, what do people wear to a rodeo?" In the back of my mind I was hoping to heck it wasn't something drab like what Valerie continued to wear around the ranch. I tried to switch up what I wore, sure I had purchased a few shirts online but they fit me well and weren't baggy in the least. My jean style had changed a little bit, I still had my shorties but also a few more 'straight cut' jeans too, though I wore those less than the skinny jeans.
"Oh well, it's like the fair really. But there's more riding and competition at the rodeo, the fair is more kids rides, junk food and bright lights. I'm in a few competitions, so you can come and watch if you want. I think Declan and Trisha said they'd come by and watch a couple of my rounds," I nodded, as I snuggled closer to Devyn. This being my first rodeo and all I didn't want to get lost or stray too far from Declan and Trisha and end up in some bull ring getting killed.
"It doesn't sound like a heck of a lot of fun, but I'll come and watch anyway...I might learn something new." Devyn seemed okay with my answer and we sat in the porch chair a little while longer. I must have drifted off to sleep because the next thing I know I woke to Trisha putting a blanket over Devyn and I.
Seeing that I had woken however she stopped, "I didn't want to wake either of you but it's late and ya'll should be getting some proper rest." Moving a little, I felt Devyn begin to stir and Trisha retreated quickly back inside.
"We better go to bed Devyn...I mean, you to yours and me to mine. It's late and I'm sure Adrian is going to put you through hell tomorrow." There was no doubt that Adrian would let his hangover dictate how he treated everyone, I knew I had let a few rule my day. They weren't pleasant and I would try to avoid Adrian as much as I could but poor Devyn would be stuck with him till dinner time.
"Yeah, we better get to bed. I was having the best sleep though, goodnight Leah." Devyn kissed my cheek before rising from the swing seat and heading off to bed. I eyed his butt as he walked off and heard him chuckle when he turned unexpectedly.
"And here I thought it was just guys that looked at girls rear ends." I laughed, mostly at the joke but also at the fact that I had been caught staring at Devyn's bum. I couldn't help it, I had decided that aside from Devyn's face the only other decent view around here was his backside.
"Go to bed." I growled playfully as I rose from the seat and went inside. Just as I was about to push the door open I heard a low whistle and turned to see Devyn watching me from where he stood. I laughed, pushed the front door open and went inside.
"Goodnight Devyn," I called, before shutting the door firmly behind me. Trisha stood not too far inside, a wide smile on her face as I handed her the blanket back. She took it without a word but continued smiling at me.
"You two are so cute together, it's about time Devyn found someone proper." I don't know what Trisha meant by proper but I didn't think too much about it as I wished her a goodnight and climbed the stairs up to my attic room. There was no doubt about it though, my head was firmly in the clouds and wasn't coming down any time soon.
