All the small kit could sense for the first few days of her life, where the sounds of her mother's voice, the scent of her mother, and brother, and the taste of her mother's sweet, warm milk. When she finally opened her eyes, she saw the bright red pelt of her mother, and the dark brown, tabby fur of her brother. "Honeywing! Appleflight!" she heard her mother call. "Look look! My kits are starting to open their eyes!" "Congratulations Jadestripe!" Meowed a sweet voice that belonged to her mother's yellow tabby sister, Honeywing. "They are so precious!" gushed Appleflight, the peach colored she-cat, who was Jadestripe's best friend since they were kits. "What are you going to name them?" Asked Shadepool, the gray tabby deputy, who was just walking into the nursery. "I think I'll name the red and black tortoiseshell she-cat Foxkit, and the tabby tom, Hawkkit." purred Jadestripe. "Where's Thornstar? She should know that my kits have opened their eyes, and will be ready for apprenticeship in 5 moons." "I think she went on a patrol, but should be coming back soon Jadestripe." said Shadepool, as she was walking out. "In fact," meowed a calm voice. "I am right here." "Thornstar, this is Foxkit, and Hawkkit." purred Jadestripe, licking her kits clean. "Congratulations, Jadestripe. They are beautiful, and I will be sure to give them wonderful mentors when they are ready to become apprentices." said Thornstar.
As the months passed, the two kits grew quickly.
"Hawkkit!" yelled Foxkit. "Stop stepping on my tail!" "I am not!" Hawkkit responded. "Arghh!" groaned Foxkit jumping on her brother. Hawkkit pushed his sister off and they started to fight. "If I fake surrender, then I can surprise Hawkkit by jumping up to attack him, and then pin him to the ground!" thought Foxkit. When Foxkit pretended to surrender, Hawkkit made to stand over her, but the swift she-kit jumped up, into his stomach, flipping him over and pinning him down, before he could realize what had happened. "Wha-What was that!?" he spluttered, dust covering his glossy brown coat. "That, was what I call the feint and pin." Foxkit purred mischievously. "Woah!" said Shadepool with her apprentice, Lightpaw, about to walk into the nursery. Lightpaw dropped a mouthful of clean moss she was going to use to line the nursery with. "That was cool!" "Thanks Lightpaw" Foxkit purred, shyly. "Hey! What about me?" Hawkkit complained, cleaning himself off. "You did well too Hawkkit." Shadepool meowed. "You will both make fine warriors when you are older." Hawkkit smiled. "Thanks Shadepool!" Foxkit was about to follow her brother into the nursery, when a light reddish, tabby, warrior named Rosewing called out. "Foxkit! Come over here a second. Thornstar would like to speak with you." Foxkit glanced over at Hawkkit, who nodded encouragingly. "Ummm. Yes Thornstar?" she asked, as the gray she-cat padded over. "Hawkkit, go on into the nursery. I won't keep her long." Thornstar said. Hawkkit sighed, as he turned to go into the nursery. "Yes Thornstar." Thornstar turned her attention back onto Foxkit. "Now Foxkit. Can you show me that move you did on Hawkkit?" "Oh. Uh. Sure." "Ok. Pretend I am an enemy warrior, about to attack." said Thornstar. As Thornstar and Foxkit started battling, many other cats gathered around to watch the young kit take on Forestclan's leader. When Foxkit feinted, she fooled Thornstar, so when the much larger she-cat was about to stand over top of Foxkit, she leapt up, caught Thornstar off balance, flipped the much larger leader over, and landed on top of her, knocking the breath out of Thornstar. "Oof!" As Foxkit let Thornstar up, all the other cats stared in awe. "What's wrong?" wondered Foxkit. As if she read her mind, Thornstarsaid in a very serious voice, "Foxkit, the reason why everyone is staring, is because you are the first cat to ever beat me in a fight since I became leader."
