Songs of the chapter - Seesaw (MDP) & Fake Love Orchestral Version (MDP)
The chaos of the previous night slowly settled into something quieter—something more manageable—as the hours passed and the world resumed its steady rhythm. Kyomi stood in the middle of her small living room, Min-ches cradled against her hip, her little fingers curled around the neckline of Kyomi's shirt. The familiar scent of home was oddly comforting after everything. No bright lights, no echoes of a crowd, no blurred visions or collapsing into strange arms. Just the creak of the old apartment floorboards and the soft hum of the fridge. Life, as overwhelming as it could be, was moving forward again.
She had returned from Mineso's that morning, arms filled with Min-ches' diaper bag, a faint shadow under her eyes, but a quiet sense of grounding in her chest. Seeing her baby's face again—those chubby cheeks and sleepy eyes—was the only real medicine she'd needed. Kyomi had stood in the doorway of her nursery for a full minute, just watching Min-ches rest in her crib, the innocence of her breath rising and falling like a tiny wave.
Whatever storm had passed the night before, this little girl remained untouched by it. And that made everything feel, somehow, survivable.
Now, as the late afternoon sunlight began pouring through the kitchen window, Kyomi pulled on her worn apron and tied her hair back. Her café shift started soon. She glanced over at Min-ches playing in her bouncer nearby, babbling softly to her plush elephant. There was a strange sense of calm in the air, as if the universe was granting her a pause before anything else could stir. "Alright, sweetheart," she murmured, brushing a kiss across her daughter's forehead, "let's get back to normal—for now."
The doorbell rang just as Kyomi was slipping her shoes on, her apron already tied neatly around her waist. She scooped up her keys and padded across the apartment to open the door, revealing Mineso with a warm smile and a tote bag slung over her shoulder. "Right on time," Kyomi said, her voice a blend of appreciation and lingering fatigue.
Mineso stepped inside and immediately crouched down to where Min-ches was wobbling on her knees near the play mat, arms outstretched in a quiet request to be picked up. "There's my girl," Mineso cooed, lifting the baby effortlessly into her arms and pressing her nose to her soft cheek.
"Ready for another girls' day while mama's off being a coffee queen?"
Kyomi watched them with a soft smile, the familiar sight bringing a small comfort. "Thanks again," she said, grabbing her bag from the couch. "I don't know what I'd do without you." Mineso waved her off with a grin. "Don't even say it. You've got a village here, Kyomi. Now go, before you're late. We've got snack time, nap time, and about fifty renditions of Baby Shark to conquer." Kyomi laughed lightly, lingering at the door for a beat before finally stepping out into the hallway.
It was a quiet afternoon, the kind where the rain smudged the windows of the café and the usual crowd had thinned to just a few regulars.
She was behind the counter wiping down the espresso machine, her apron stained with coffee grounds and formula from that morning's rushed bottle prep. When the door chimed, she barely looked up—just another customer, she thought—but something about the way he moved caught her eye. Tall, composed, dressed in black from head to toe, like he'd stepped out of a dream or a warning.
He didn't order right away. Just stood there, scanning the place slowly like he was absorbing every inch of it—every inch of her. His eyes landed on her and stayed there a little too long.
Not in a leering way, but with a quiet calculation that made her stomach tighten. When he did speak, it was barely more than a murmur: "Americano. Black." No smile. No small talk. But his voice was smooth, deliberate, and unsettling in how calm it was. Like he already knew this wasn't the last time they'd speak.
