Songs of the chapter - Let Me Know (BTS) & You Broke Me First (Tate Mcrae)
Kyomi's apartment was quiet when she finally stepped inside, the soft hum of the city muffled by thick walls. She kicked off her shoes by the door, the weight of the evening pressing down on her like a heavy blanket.
Mineso had already left, but the warmth of her presence lingered in the room, a comforting reminder that she wasn't entirely alone. Kyomi carefully placed her bag on the kitchen counter and moved toward the living room, where Min-ches was sleeping peacefully in her crib. A soft smile tugged at Kyomi's lips as she sat down beside her baby, the small rise and fall of Min-ches's breath soothing her restless mind.
She took a moment to gather herself, running a hand through her hair as she stared out the window at the rain beginning to patter softly against the glass. The day's events churned in her thoughts, the encounter at the restaurant playing on repeat, tangled up with feelings she barely understood. She wondered if the storm outside mirrored the one inside her heart — unpredictable, fierce, and impossible to ignore. Just as she was beginning to settle, a sharp knock echoed through the apartment, slicing through the quiet like a sudden gust of wind.
Kyomi's breath caught, her heart racing as she hesitated near the door. The knock came again, more insistent this time. Slowly, cautiously, she moved to open it — and there he was. J
ae Hyun stood framed in the doorway, his expression unreadable but intense. The dim hallway light caught the sharp angles of his face, and for a moment, everything else fell away. Despite everything, despite the tangled mess of emotions and fear, something inside her stirred.
He didn't say anything right away, just held her gaze with a quiet urgency. Kyomi felt a mix of dread and something almost like longing knot together deep in her chest. She wanted to shut the door and lock it tight, but part of her was frozen, unsure if she should step back or step forward.
The air between them thickened, heavy with unspoken words and the weight of their complicated history.
Finally, Jae Hyun broke the silence, his voice low but steady.
"I needed to see you," he said simply, as if that explained everything. Kyomi swallowed hard, trying to steady her trembling hands. She didn't know what he wanted, or what she was willing to give — but one thing was clear: the night was far from over.
Jae Hyun stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his presence filling the small apartment with an intensity that made Kyomi's pulse quicken. His eyes locked onto hers with a mix of desperation and conviction, like he was trying to convince not just her, but himself too.
"You know," he began, voice slightly slurred but firm, "it's crazy how I just... stumbled into your cafe. Like fate or something." He ran a hand through his hair, a shaky laugh escaping him. "I've always wanted a daughter, Kyomi. Always thought about what it would be like. Maybe this... this was meant to be."
Kyomi blinked, caught off guard by the sudden vulnerability in his tone. There was something raw in the way he spoke, a rambling sort of intoxication that made his words feel both confusing and compelling.
"I don't know how to explain it," he continued, swaying just a little as if the room itself was spinning. "But seeing you again, being here with you — it feels like all those years apart don't matter. Like we're meant to be in this, together. It's not just chance." His gaze softened, but there was a hint of something calculating beneath the surface, like he was carefully choosing each word to break down her walls.
Kyomi's heart tightened, torn between skepticism and a strange pull toward the man who had walked into her life so unpredictably. The idea of fate, of destiny — it was tempting, especially when spoken with such raw emotion.
