I don't know how long I laid there, attempting to sleep, but every time my eyelids drooped and I slipped into a restless slumber, I imagined Reece's fist raising towards me, and I jolted awake again. I rolled over to the opposite side of Evan's double bed. It was freezing cold, and I huddled up inside his jumper, curled up into a ball, and pulled the covers up to my neck. I was engulfed in his scent, and I buried my face into his covers and closed my eyes. My heart was still beating rapidly from the last episode of waking up. I wasn't sure what time it was, but the room was pitch black, and it was dead silent. There were a million thoughts whizzing through my mind, but I tried to focus on my breathing: slowly inhaling and exhaling. I thought about Evan to try and take my mind off of how shitty I was feeling. It felt odd sleeping in his bed, but I liked it. I'd been to his place often enough way back in the past, he was always throwing parties, and I'd even stayed over a few times when I was too drunk to head home myself. It didn't feel the same now. I know he was just offering me somewhere to stay, I don't know how long for, until I found my feet and sorted things with Reece.
I woke up squinting as the rays of silent peeped through the cream curtains. I rolled over, half expecting to find Reece laying beside me. Instead, I rolled onto the cold, empty side of Evan's mattress. I opened my eyes fully and sat upright, stretching. It took me a minute to adjust myself to my surroundings. Evan's room was small and cramped, and his clothes were strewn all over the carpeted floor. I half smiled slightly to myself; he was so messy. I slowly got up and walked out to the main living room which was connected to the kitchen. Evan was leant over the cooker in his baggy sweatpants, his top half bare. He must've heard me walk in, because he turned around with spatula in hand. Fuck, I'd never noticed what a nice body he had. He was slim and slightly toned, but he wasn't overly muscular like some guys. I liked that. His blonde hair was wild and messy on his head, and he flashed me his typical, cheesy grin. "Morning."
I made my way over to the stove where he was cooking. "Morning," I said cheerfully as I peered into the frying pan. "Since when did you cook pancakes?" I asked inquisitively. He turned back round, sliding the spatula under the pancakes and flipping them over. "Since I had a guest staying overnight in my bed." I shook my head with a sleepy smile. "How did you sleep, anyway?" he asked me. I hoisted myself up on one of his counters, pulling down his jumper to try and cover my thighs, which resulted in the jumper dropping slightly round my neck and exposing my bare shoulder. "Yeah, I slept fine," I said as I swung my legs to and fro. "How was the couch?" He glanced at me. "The best," he said sarcastically as he served the pancakes up onto two plates. "You know, if you plan on staying longer, we need to come to some kind of arrangement," he said cheekily. I hauled myself off the counter and sat down at the breakfast table as he handed me my plate. "If you're referring that I sleep on the couch, I totally don't mind," I said as I ate. He shook his head as he sat down beside me. "That's not what I had in mind," he said. Was he referring we sleep in the same bed?
I completely blanked his flirtatious endeavours. "So is it cool if I stay for just a few more days? I don't really feel like I can face Reece at the moment," I said through a mouthful of pancakes. "You can stay as long as you need to, Lil. You know you're welcome," he said as he ate. I felt warm and fuzzy inside as I swung my legs under the counter. I was small, they didn't even reach the floor. "Thank you." We ate our breakfast in silence after that, and I washed up the plates when we'd finished as Evan went off to take a shower.
☾Evan's POV☽
The truth is, I really didn't mind how long Lily wanted to stay for. It was nice to have someone around, someone to wake up to, and cook for, and talk to. Even if it meant sleeping on the couch every night, it was nice to have some company. I closed the bathroom door, stripping off my clothes and climbing into the warm jets of shower water. i stood there for a few moments, just letting the water pour over me. I wanted Lily to stay longer than a few days but after all, she had to go and sort things out with her dickhead boyfriend. I didn't want her to go back to him. He treated her like a piece of shit, and he totally didn't appreciate her. She deserved so much better than him. I quickly washed my body and my hair before climbing out of the shower and wrapping a towel around my waist. I would've usually went and changed straight away, but I heard shouting in the kitchen, so I rushed there straight away.
"You're really pinning the blame on me?" shouted Lily through gritted teeth as she clasped the phone to her ear. There was a moment of silence before she spoke again. "Don't fucking act like you're the hero in this situation," she snapped back as she went and sat down on the couch. "I don't know if I can take this anymore. All the arguing," she said quietly with a sigh as her tone of voice completely flipped. I leant in the kitchen doorway, watching her. I shouldn't be eaves-dropping, but I was worried about her.
"I don't want to come back, Reece," she said sadly. There was a longer silence. "I'm staying with a Evan for a little while." I coughed, and Lily turned around in surprise. She stared at me for a few moments before placing her hand against the receiver and whispering. "It's Reece." I wanted so badly to snatch the phone from her, and fire away abuse at that woman-beating dickhead. But I didn't want to in front of Lily, and besides, it wasn't my business to dive into their relationship. I nodded at her as she stared at me. "I'm going to get changed. Call me if you need me," I said quickly.
☾Lily's POV☽
Did he really have to distract me with that beautiful body when I was midway through arguing with my lousy boyfriend? He was casually leant in the doorway. He had only a towel wrapped around his waist, and his messy hair was dripping wet and stuck to his forehead in wet tendrils. I swallowed slightly. He looked seriously hot. I wasn't sure how long I was staring because he raised an eyebrow. "It's Reece," I whispered as I covered the receiver. He spoke, but I couldn't hear him as Reece screamed on the other end of the line. He disappeared into the bedroom. I tried to divert my mind from the fact that he was partially naked and continued my argument with Reece. "Listen, I'm really not in the mood for arguing with you right now. I actually have better things to do, so I'll call you later," I said quickly. I hung up.
☾Evan's POV☽
I so badly wanted to speak to Reece, but Lily was the one who'd have to face him at some point or the other, and she had to be able to fight her own battles. I quickly ran the towel through my hair to dry off most of the moisture, and threw on my jeans, white shirt and flannel. Lily was done arguing when I left the bedroom, and instead she was slunk back on the couch, sighing.
I went and sat beside her and she turned to look at me as the couch dipped down. "Everything okay?" I asked. "Not really," she sighed. "He doesn't want me back. I'm a shit girlfriend," she said as her lower lip quivered. "Hey, don't say that. You're an amazing girlfriend. He's the one with the issues that he needs to sort out. In all honesty, you're better off without him," I said as I opened my arm out. She sniffed as she shuffled closer to me and rested her head on my chest. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and pulled her closely. "You think so?" she asked quietly as she placed her small hands on my chest. "I know so," I said with a faint smile as I stroked her hair behind her ears. I could sit like this all day, but after several silent minutes, Lily sat upright and looked up at me through red, glistening eyes. "I'm going to go take a shower," she said as she looked at me directly in the eyes. I nodded. "Sure, take your time." She smiled weakly before standing up and heading to the bathroom. I leaned back in the couch and sighed loudly.
