"WAKE UP, YOU HAVE SPELLS TO LEARN" I fall out of my bed to see Jennifer standing above me scowling at me like I'm just revolting.
"Who let you in and how did you know where I live?" I groan
"a little girl let me in and I followed you home” she twirls her hair like she’s trying to act cute.
“one, that’s creepy and two, why are trying to act girly.”
“what is that suppose to mean?” she uses a condescending voice.
"you tried to kill me yesterday, that will make anyone want to stay further than 30 feet from you”
“just hurry up and get ready so we can go to morning practice” she walks out of the room
“wait, practice?” but it was too late, she left for up stairs.
When I went up stairs after I got dressed I found the unstable magical disaster chatting it up with my little sister.
“Lily” I rub the bridge of my nose in annoyance “she was trying to kill me yesterday.”
Lily looks at Jennifer while the blue mess herself just sat there nodding and eating an apple. “please your a little too dramatic, your obviously still alive and without a scratch I might add” she points the apple at me like I’m the one at fault.
I stand there glaring at her, my rage becoming worse by the second. Everyone freezes and their eyes fill with fear then I hear a crash down the hallway and see my mom crawling into the kitchen.
“Andrew, y..you need t..to calm down. Your re..releasing a lot of mana..” she collapses on the ground gasping in pain.
Calm down, how am I supposed to calm down now!
My dad walks in like nothing is wrong and looks around “Drew take a deep breath and focus”
So I close my eyes and breath and everyone finally relaxes.
“You are an idiot, how could you lose control of your power like that!” Jennifer mocks me and my anger boils again and everyone starts to grimace.
My mom grabs her and drags her into the other room “Me and you are going to have a long talk missy” my mother says with a forced grin.
I grab the spell book and walk to school without Jennifer who was still getting chewed out but my mom about her attitude towards some who is still new to the magical world.
The school still grand as ever just sits atop the ugliest field there is, but now I know why. All the magic that’s used around here has turned it to a wasteland of wild magic and dead plants, kind of depressing if you ask me.
I see Mr. Hart standing at the front of the school with his arms crossed  “So do you want to show me a spell or are you going to go back home”
“You never said anything about this”
“That was before I felt a massive magic surge this morning” His eyes narrow and meet mine.
“That might have been me, Jennifer came to my house this morning.” I rub the back of my head trying to brush it off.
Mr. Hart just rubs the bridge of his nose where his glasses rest then brushes his dark brown hair back “I swear that girl gives me more trouble than fireworms do”
“Fireworms?” I question
“I’ll teach you later, but only if you can do a spell right now”
I close my eyes and raise my hand “magic, take shape and guard my body from harm, Shield” a green light emits from my hand and forms a wall in front of me.
Mr. Hart cringes in front of it “Okay, I’m going to teach you chant less magic and one line chants starting today” he waves me inside then stops me “Now I want you to make a portal to the staircase”
“I haven’t gotten that far yet in the book” I explain.
“It’s not in the book” he states
“then how am I supposed to cast it if I don’t know it or can’t research it.”
“you have to imagine the spell forming in your mind. The more you know about the spell the easier it gets to cast.” he looks forward and waits.
I close my eyes again and think of a portal and how it would look, work, and feel. Then I pour my magic into it and I feel wind swirling in one area and the space in front of me opens across the grand hall and to the stairs.
“Wow, I did not think you would figure it out that fast. That took your mom a week to get that down, nice job.” he gets closer to inspect it “Hmm, a little unstable but great for your first time. you can go ahead and let it go, we're not going to use it today.”
“Then what was the point of this”
“so you can learn” he walks past the portals and up the stairs to his office “Come on” he calls. “Time to learn some real spells”
