When the world became light again, I saw that I was back in the mirror room. Mary sat in front of me, typing away on a computer. She disconnected the wires then looked to me.
"According to the test, it would seem you would be best suited in Dauntless." She informed me. Dauntless? Wad that a good thing? It was only one faction like my mother said. Had I manipulated the test well enough?
"We don't see that many Amity to Dauntless results," she eyed me somewhat suspiciously, "but it does happen occasionally." She typed something on her computer. "Now tell me something. What are your thoughts?" She got ready to type what I said.
"My thoughts?" I stammered out.
"Yes your thoughts on the test. Or on your results. How do you feel about it?" Something told me this wasn't a normal protocol for the test, but more of a questioning.
"I- I feel it suits me fine. I have always felt out of place in Amity." I lied. Mary nodded and typed.
"Good. That will be all." I exited out the door to find Cedar.
..............
"So what were your results?" Cedar asked me when we were alone back at the Amity compound. We were currently sitting under a big oak tree, our favorite hang out spot. Should I tell him the real result? Or that I'm Divergent? Was he Divergent too? I decided to quickly lie. It seemed like most of what I said were lies lately.
"Amity. What about you?"
"Oh uh Amity." His eyes darted to the side.
"So is that what you are gonna choose?" I asked.
He shrugged, "Like you said, I will just follow my heart. Where ever my heart goes, I will too." There was a break in the conversation, until he spoke up.
"It would be hard in another faction seeing how I'm named after a tree." He joked. I laughed along.
"Have you even heard my name?" I added. We laughed and joked around just like we always would do. I would hate to change this.
.............
"Oh May, you look so beautiful!" My mom gushed about me the morning of the Choosing Ceremony. She wiped a tear from her eye, "It seems like just yesterday you were just learning to walk and now look at you, all grown up!" She admired my flowing yellow dress and flower in my hair. She took a deep breath as she suddenly became more serious and spoke to me in a hushed tone.
"Have you decided what you are going to do?"
"I have to pick it. They will notice if I don't." I sighed, "but I will be fine."
...............
"May! Wait up!" I turned around to see Cedar running up to me. He wore a red button down shirt and khakis. I waited for him then we began to walk into the Hub.
"Are you nervous?" I asked him.
He shook his head, "I'm just gonna follow my heart. And it told me where it is going." He smiled at me and I smiled back. We began to climb up a large amount of stairs, clouded by other people of our faction. We reached the 20th floor with is a vast room filled with people of every faction. The 16 year olds who were choosing their faction today were told to sit in alphabetical order. Cedar's last name began with an M so he would be before me. Before he took his seat, which was rather far away from mine, he stopped me.
"You ready?" He asked.
"Yes. I think I am."
"Good. Hopefully we will see each other soon." He leaned in and kissed my cheek, the went to his seat. I stood there for a moment before going to mine. He had never done that before.
