Sliding back into my seat beside Connor, I smile at my plate which contains my order of a cheeseburger and fries, or as they call them in Scotland – chips. That’s going to take some getting used to. What I consider chips is what the Scots call crisps. Why does Britain always have to be so confusing? What’s wrong with just calling their fries, fries and their chips, chips?
The sight of the cheeseburger has my mouth watering. I haven’t eaten in hours and I’m starving. Not wasting any more time I lift it to my mouth and take big bites. I catch Trish’s wary look and mentally role my eyes. This is the sort of place people eat their burgers with a knife and fork – ridiculous! You’re not supposed to eat a burger with cutlery. It defeats the purpose.
I sip on my water before going back to my food, this time with more care. Deliberately eating slower and making sure to lean over the plate so it catches any stray crumbs that fall.
“Trish, I was just sayin’ to Billy there, we’re takin’ Ryan and his friend to Atlantis tomorrow - the leisure centre up the road. He’s been naggin’ his pour mother for weeks about swimmin’ so we thought since tomorrow is Saturday we’d take him. If Lewis is up for it, I’m sure Ryan would love for him t’ come along.” Rob eyes Trish from across the table while also shooting Lewis some questioning looks. His mouths curved into an easy smile.
Trish also looks to Lewis a smile of her own playing on her lips.
“I think that’s a brilliant idea. Y’ could even show Lewis some of the town if you’re feeling up to it. So what d’you think then, would y’ like t’ go swimmin’ with Ryan and his friend?”
Lewis’ eyes light up immediately and he knuckle punches Ryan under the table, out of view from the adults at the opposite end. Obviously they’ve been planning this and were hoping Trish would say yes. I laugh to myself as he replies with an excited ‘yes’ before turning back to Ryan and gushing about tomorrows events.
“Well, since your brother seems to b’ makin’ plans without y’ Adelina, why doesn’t Connor be a gentleman and show y’ around the town himself; I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.”
Stopping with a fry mid air I franticly try to put together some excuse for avoiding this one. It’s not that I don’t want to spend time with Connor. I’d just like some time to myself for the day; to go for a walk and find my bearings - alone. Then take the time to take a closer look at the books that are in my room and maybe start on one or two of them. And the way Connors eyes widen when Billy asks the question leads me to believe he wants to be with me tomorrow just as much as I want to be with him.
Thankfully, he’s the one to answer before my silence grows longer.
“Sorry Billy. I’ve already made plans for tomorrow ‘n’ I have work that night so no can do.”
“Oh, that’s too bad.”
Yeah - not really.
After finishing the meal and after Billy and Rob are done talking business, the four of us head back to The Crib. Lewis and I decided it was too swanky to just be called a house so we named it ‘The Crib’. Yeah we’re cool. Deal with it.
