Thank you!
After Paul poorly tries to recreate the scene of me falling he eventually starts to show me around the pizza place. He leads me through the tables to the back of the room where there is a small square table that contains a till and different sheets of paper, it stands to the side of the bar. I'm actually impressed. My impressions of Oban have all been 'small'. Everything seems to be really delicate and small, but this pizza place is very spacious and George definitely hasn't held back on anything. It's all very glamorous and elaborate. I suppose that would be why it seems to be the most popular place for the teenagers of Oban as Paul is telling me.
"Mostly every Friday my friends and I hang out here, some Saturdays as well. We just chill and eat some pizza before goin' out t' a party." He swings himself up onto the bars counter and starts to swing his legs. I stay standing and wait for him to continue.
"It's Oban, y' know, so there isn't a lot to do as y' have probably guessed. So all most every week someone throws a party just because theres nothin' else to do. Sometimes we'll go to the arcade or the cinema if we're desperatly bored but theres always a party afterwards." He continues to swing his legs.
"By party, what exactly do you mean?" In Canada, there was a serious lack in partys. All my friends and I done was hang out at each others houses. The only time there was a party was when it was someone's birthday.
"What y' dunno what a party is?" He laughs and jumps down from the counter to take a more suitable seat in one of the small brown wooden chairs at a table. I join him and sit across from him.
"I know what a party is Paul, I just mean when you Scots say 'party' what exactly does that intitle?"
"Well, we'll go to someones house have a laugh, do cheesy dance moves, play some stupid games, y' know - truth or dare, spin the bottle, have y' ever. Sometimes theres and older friend there and he'll bring some beers. That sort of thing." I nod and clasp my hands together, placing them on my legs.
"Oh, that sounds normal. You drink beer? But.... In fact, I don't even know what age you are. What age are you?" I never even thought to ask. I assumed he was the same age as Conor.
"I'm sixteen. Seventeen in November. Yeah, I drink a few beers now and again. Not every week though. George doesn't mind as long as he knows where I am and if i'm not stayin' with the person then he'll pick me up."
"Oh." Seventeen this year? I only just turned fifteen. He probably thinks I'm some stupid little girl.
"I would never come home drunk though, George would kill me." He laughs a little and I feel the table shake slightly.
"Why do you call your Dad, George?" I would never call my parents by their first name, I always assumed it to be bad manners. Maybe Paul's adopted?
"Well, I call him Dad when I'm with him but you know him as George don't y'? So instead of sayin' 'my dad' all the time I figured I'd just call him George. "
"Oh, OK." I fidget with the my fingers and try to think of something to say. I really hate awkward silences.
"So, you've saw this place but my question is have y' saw Oban?" I glance up at him and can't help the heat that spreads through my cheeks when I see him looking at me and smiling.
"Not really, I mean I've been here when I was younger so I know some places but I can't really remember any of it." It's true. Although I came here as a child the whole place is so different from what I pictured when I was a little girl. Also, since realising when my family did come here we never came into town it would be nice to have a look around.
