Nothing was ever really the same after Bilbo's little "surprise" at his one hundred and eleventh birthday party. Gandalf's visits started frequent but as the years went by he would come to Bag End less and less. After nine years Gandalf had yet to be seen. Y/n stayed when she could with Frodo to help him with what she could, to keep him sane mostly, and keep others from bothering him about Bilbo's strange disappearance. One particular night Y/n was able to convince Frodo to go and have some ale at the Green dragon with her, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took. At first Frodo didn't seem all that interested in the surrounding merriment but when Merry and Pippin climbed onto a table, that changed very quickly. With ales in hand Merry and Pippin belt out,

"Hey ho, to the bottle I go!

To heal my heart and drown my woe!

Rain may fall and wind may blow!

But there still beeeeeeee!

Many miles to go!

Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain,

and the stream that falls from hill to plain!

Better than rain or rippling brook!..."

Pippin finishes off the song with, "Is a mug of beer inside this Took!"

Cheers erupted from around the room for the two hobbits. Frodo also finished his little dance around the table as Merry and Pippin clanked their ale tankards together.

Off to the side Y/n was helping Rosie pour ale for the gathered hobbits.

"What did you think of the performance?" Rosie asked Y/n with a smile

"Quite entertaining," Y/n giggled, "Especially Frodo's performance" she said more quietly but Rosie overheard her.

Rosie nudged Y/n's arm and the two girl hobbits laughed to themselves as they continued to serve ale.

The night moved on with more song and merriment until it was time to send every hobbit on their way. Rosie and Y/n stood by the door making sure that each hobbit exited the inn. Frodo and Sam stood off to the side to wait for Y/n. They talked to each other until a very intoxicated hobbit bends down in front of Rosie and Y/n and says,
"Good night sweet maidens if the golden ale!"
"Mind who you're sweet talking." Frodo and Sam said in unison.
Frodo watches, with a hint of jealousy in his eyes, the h/l h/c haired female hobbit giggle to her friend as the very drunk hobbit hobbled away from them. Y/n bid farewell to Rosie and walked over Frodo and Sam.
"You boys all alright?" She asked.
"Fine." They both mumbled looking down and turning to walk home.
Sam parted ways with Frodo and Y/n to head to his own hobbit hole. The pair walked in silence for some time until Frodo broke the silence,

"Y/n?"

"Yes Frodo?"

After a moment Frodo whispers,

"I miss Bilbo..."

Y/n stared wide eyed at Frodo for a moment before speaking,

"So do I Frodo...So do I."

The two hobbits continued their walk in silence until they reached the beautiful garden that was Bag End. They however did not immediately enter.

"Frodo?" Y/n said with what sounded like fear in her voice.

Frodo looked at his friend and then back at Bag End. The large green round door was slightly ajar. Frodo never left the front door open or unlocked knowing how well certain relatives would jump at the chance to ransack Bag End if Frodo wasn't there. Frodo and Y/n approached the open door as quietly as their hobbit feet could be. Once inside the two hobbits looked around. The hobbit hole would have been in total darkness had the moon not been shining brightly through the windows and now fully open door. The only signs of movement were papers and curtains blown about from the breeze that came through the slightly open windows and door. Behind Y/n and Frodo a hand emerged from the darkness and gripped Frodo's shoulder. Frodo jumps, gasps and turns around flailing his arms while Y/n lets out a shriek. To their surprise the hand belonged to a wild and very disheveled Gandalf.

"Gandalf?! Wha-?" Y/n started but was interrupted by Gandalf grabbing Frodo's shoulders again and asking,

"Is it secret? Is it safe?!"

Frodo stood frozen for moment but then runs over to a chest in the hallway and rummages through it, tossing out scrolls and other items in the process. He finds the sealed envelope and hands it to Gandalf. Gandalf snatches it from Ford and throws it into the burning fireplace.

"What are you doing?!" Frodo exclaims.

Y/n grabs Frodo by the arm before he could put his hand in the fire. The envelope is rapidly consumed by the flames, revealing Bilbo's ring inside. Gandalf gets a pair of tongs from next to the fireplace and picks up the Ring as Frodo and Y/n watch. Gandalf turns away from the fire to Frodo and says,

"Hold out your hand Frodo, it's quite cool."

Frodo hesitantly holds out his hand and Gandalf drops the Ring in Frodo's hand. Frodo instinctively goes to drop the hot object but quickly realizes that Gandalf was right and the Ring was cold. Y/n placed a finger on it and was surprised to feel the coldness it gave off as if it was never thrown into a fire. Gandalf stands up and turns away from the fire.

"What can you see? Can you see anything?" Gandalf asks

Frodo turns the Ring over and over between his fingers and says,

"Nothing. There's nothing..."

Y/n watched Gandalf carefully as he started to relax but notices him stiffen again when Frodo speaks,

"Wait. There are markings. It's some form of Elvish. I can't read it."

"There are few who can," Gandalf said slowly turning around to face the two hobbits, "The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here

"There are few who can," Gandalf said slowly turning around to face the two hobbits, "The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here."

"Mordor?" Frodo and Y/n spoke at the same time, both looking up at Gandalf from the Ring.

In a grim voice Gandalf "In the common tongue it says,

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
