"Jadis is alive..."

Both Peter and Edmund froze. froze.
"She's what?" Peter whispered after a dreadful silence.
Susan nodded. "Orious saw her with his own eyes." She said.
Peter took a deep breath. "Where?" He asked slowly.
"In the woods." Susan replied. "About ten miles from here."
Peter stared at her, all of a sudden feeling a hand clamp the bottom of his tunic. His head turned to the side to see Edmund, eyes wide and shining, gripping Peter's tunic as though he'd never let go. He was shaking, his skin as white as snow or paper. He looked up at Peter. "She - She can't be." He whispered, his voice cracking. "She can't be."
Peter took a deep breath and, swallowing thickly, turned slowly back to his sister.
"Is he absolutely sure it was the witch he saw?" He asked, double checking for his brothers sake.
Susan nodded. "He was absolutely certain." She told him. "Said she was stood a few hundred yards from him, as clear as day. Real. He said that she had the broken remains of her wand in her hand, and an evil smirk spread across her face. It was definitely her."
Peter sighed, turning back to his brother with a wary look on his face.
Edmund was staring at Susan. He didn't look well, he didn't look well at all.
"Ed?" Peter asked cautiously.
Edmund looked up at him. "She can't be." Edmund whispered. "She can't be alive."
"Edmund." Susan said, sighing slowly. "She is."
But Edmund shook his head. "No." He whispered. He was trembling now, and hard.
"Ed calm down." Peter said, quickly but calmly.
Edmund took a deep breath. "She's not." He whispered. "She can't be. She'll - she'll come after me." He continued, his voice shaking. "She'll kill me." He stared out a the sea, not looking at either of his siblings.
"Edmund I promise you I won't let that happen." Peter said, placing a hand on his shoulder.
Edmund's head snapped up to look at him, and Peter's heart broke as he saw the tears rolling down his cheeks.
Edmund shook his head. "You can't promise that." He said, voice still shaking.
"I can and I have." Peter said firmly, gripping Edmund's shoulder tightly.
Edmund trembled harder, tears spilling down his cheeks.
"Edmund you need to try and calm down." Susan said slowly, taking a deep breath.
Edmund shook his head. "Can't." He whispered. "She's back."
Peter sighed, knowing that Edmund had finaly excepted it. "Edmund please just try."
Edmund's breathing became uneven as he stared at the sea.
"Breath Ed." Susan said, placing a hand on his other shoulder.
Edmund's breathing became quicker. "She's alive." He choked.
"Ed we know." Peter said. "But I promise you that I won't let her lay a finger on you, you hear me?"
Edmund stared back up at him and after a few seconds, he ran.
"Ed!" Peter called as his brother ran off down the beach and up the marble stair case.
Peter sighed. "Does Lucy know?" He asked Susan.
Susan shook her head. "Not yet." She mumbled.
"You should probably go tell her." Peter said warily. "Whilst I go and find Edmund."
Susan nodded in agreement. "I hope he's alright." She sighed.
Peter sighed too. "Me too." He mumbled, before running off.
His first thought was to check his and Edmund's room, and he was rather confused when Edmund wasn't there.
On the way down to the throne room, he bumped into Mr and Mrs Beaver. He stopped them in the hallway and asked if they'd seen Edmund.
Mrs beaver nodded. "Yes, I saw him in the gardens, just a few minutes ago."
Peter nodded. "Thank you." He said.
"Although." Mr beaver said quickly. "It did look as though he was heading twords the woods."
Peter frowned. Why and earth would Edmund go into the woods if he knew that was where Jadis was? He sighed. "Thanks again." He muttered before rushing to the nearest door and dashing outside.
He scanned the gardens, but he couldn't see Edmund anywhere.
He took a deep breath, and making sure he had his sword, opened one of the gates and entered the woods.
He walked for a good ten minutes, checking every inch of the surrounding woods for signs of Jadis or Edmund. He breathed a sigh of relief when he spotted his brother, who was sat under a tree, eyes wide and full of tears. He had his legs drawn up to his chest, chin rested on his knee.
Peter bit his lip as he slowly walked over and joined his brother. Edmund made no sign that he knew Peter was there, but Peter knew that he knew.
"Ed." He said slowly. "I won't let anything happen to you."
Edmund's head moved slowly to the side as he looked up at his brother. "But- But she did last time." He choked.
"This time is different." Peter said softly. "This time, I can protect you." His voice wobbled slightly as he said the last line, tears appearing in his eyes.
Edmund sighed, looking back out at the woods. "I know but-" He stopped.
"But?" Peter questioned warily.
"But this is Jadis we're talking about!" Edmund shouted. "Jadis! You know what she's like. She won't stop until she gets what she wants!"
"Edmund calm down." Peter said slowly.
Edmund shut his mouth, tears rolling down his cheeks.
"Look." Peter continued. "If she does come after you, I give you my word that she won't hurt you."
"How can you say that?" Edmund whispered. "She's bound to find me."
Peter took a deep breath. "Alright." He said slowly. "If she does manage to - find you. You have my word that she won't kill you."
Edmund sighed, moving over to rest his head on Peter's shoulder. "Okay." He mumbled. "But I doubt you'll be able to keep the promise about her not touching me. Because if she does find me, it's quite obvious what she'll do."
Peter cringed lightly. "You're brave Ed." He said. "Whatever she does to you, you can handle it."
"If it's anything like last time-" Edmund choked.
"You got through last time. And if - if - She finds you again, you can get through that too. If."
"If." Edmund repeated quietly.
"If." Peter said, wrapping his arms around his brother, pulling him into a tight hug.
