your phone rang, jolting you out of your deep sleep. the familiar ring tone made you instantly know it was shawn before you even looked at the caller ID and you answered it quickly. "hello?" you glanced at the clock: 3 am.

it wasn't unusual for shawn to call you this late at night. as his best friend, it was your duty to all be available for him whenever his anxiety was acting up, which usually occurred late at night.

"i'm coming over. is that okay?" he asked, his voice frantic. you agreed and began to ask him what was wrong, but the line ended as soon as the 'yes' left your mouth.

you got up from your bed, putting your slippers on and wrapping a robe around your body. it was freezing in your apartment, so you turned the heat on and waited in the living room for shawn to show up.

his anxiety has been getting worse and worse as he's gotten older but he's also been getting better at controlling it. the last few times he's come over, he's been fairly come by the time he's shown up.

when the door clicked open, you turned your head to see shawn kicking off his shoes as he shut the door. you made a few quick strides to get to his side and the second you did, both your arms wrapped around each other in a tight embrace.

he smelled like he always did. you never could put your finger on what it was, but it always just reminded you of home. "are you okay?" you asked. a sniffle was all the response that you got before you pulled away, grabbed his hand and dragged him to the couch.

his face was red and splotchy like he had been crying the entire way here, so you placed a small kiss on his cheek and ran your fingers through the back of his hair. strictly platonic, you thought.

"i'm better now," he whispered. his eyes were locked on yours. his lips were parted and wet from tears. you smelled bourbon on his breath.

"are you drunk?" you asked, pulling away slightly from him and your brows furrowed. shawn shrugged and then paused a moment before he nodded slowly and reluctantly. "what happened?"

"i don't want to talk about it. i just wanna sit here with you," he admitted. you nodded and pulled him back to you. shawn laid down with his head on your lap, tracing small circles on your knee. you played with his hair which always seemed to sooth him. you thought he was asleep after a few moments, his breathing slowed down and he stopped sniffling and felt limp in your arms, his hands no longer moving. "when you're asleep, do you dream of me?" he asked you, his voice hoarse from not talking for so long. "because i dream of you. and when i'm awake, that's all i do."

you stopped moving your hand, almost afraid of what he was saying. and what you would say back to him. it was something that you had wanted to hear for as long as you remembered. something that you had dreamt about. "shawn...."

shawn sat up, facing you. his eyes were soft and filled with honey as he looked into yours. your eyes scanned his entire face, looking for any sign of truth or deception or anything to give you a hint of what he was feeling. was it him or the bourbon? "i need to know, how do you feel?"

"i-" you stumbled on your words. shawn looked at you hopeful, but you hated to admit any feelings for him in this state. his thumb traced your bottom lip as he looked at it intently.

"do you notice when i get mad, i clench my jaw? because i notice when you get mad, you close your eyes." you nodded softly. you did notice. you noticed everything about him, always.

his eyes stayed on your lips as your hand went to his cheek. you wanted to lean your forehead on his. to kiss his lips. to lay down with him.

"everything that you do, makes my heart stop." you crashed your lips to his, wrapping your arms around his neck. shawn pulled you into his lap, his arms firmly wrapped around your waist as he kissed you back. you couldn't taste the bourbon on his lips.

he pulled away too quickly for your liking, but you let him. both of you were breathing quickly, trying to catch your breath. his hand was running up and down your side as his other one caressed your cheek. "do you know that i'm in love with you?"

that one sentence took your breath away, causing you to pull back just slightly to get a better look at his face. his eyes filled with hope. "do you know that i'm in love with you?" you rebuttaled. he smiled, pulling your lips back to his.
