Mak Wheeler: Chapter 1

4) Every Breath You Take

She wasn't breathing.

Mike and El were both sobbing. Mike finally got the courage to do something. He learned CPR in gym class and decided to try it. He did everything he could to not explode. This is what Mrs. Byers felt, except, ten times worse because, he knows that she wouldn't come back after this. At least, not for another ten years. He couldn't handle that. He just found her. He couldn't lose her.

This was worse than the day he lost El. The worst part was that this was El! This was half of El. This was her laugh, her nose, her eye lashes. But this was also him. His hair, his ears, and his freckles. She even had Nancy's eye color. He loved his girls.

He had been doing CPR for five minutes and thirty two seconds by the time he was about to give up. He just kept trying and trying until finally. Mackenzie popped up with a gasp.

Mike and El were shaking. They both pulled her in for a hug, crying uncontrollably. "JESUS MAK! Don't scare us like that they again!" He said, still shaking.

The rest of the party watched in confusion. Max pulled Lucas, Dustin, and Will aside. "Why the hell are they so friendly to her? They don't even know her!" Max said whispering. "I don't know, she kinda looks like if El and Mike had a kid." Dustin said laughing. Max, Lucas, and Will gave each other looks.

Suddenly it's as if a light bulb went off in Max's head! "Holy shit!" She yelled as she ran over to Mike and El. Mak had fallen asleep on Mike's lap, who was still on the floor. Mike was watching her carefully because, no one was going to hurt her.

"She's yours. Isn't she?" Max asked. The rest of the boys looked confused. Mike looked at El and they both nodded their heads. "Sorry for giving her such a hard time guys." Max said apologetically.

"It's fine Max, you couldn't have known." El said, giving her best friend a smile.

Will was following along but, Dustin and Lucas were lost. "So, what's happening?" Lucas said. Max rolled her eyes and smacked her boyfriend on the back of the head.

"She's their daughter, doofus!" Max said. Both of them looked shocked, and confused but, mostly shocked.

"Bu—wha—I mean—like— How?" Lucas asked, freaking out.

Mike was ready with the answer, what she told him kept replaying in his head like a record. "She and her twin brother, Miles, our son, were kidnapped by the Lab in 2010. They both have powers like El so, somehow, Miles brought Mackenzie back here to stop what was happening to them." He was fine with talking about that part. It was the next part that was going to hurt. "She and Miles were emotionally and physically tortured so they did what they could." He took a deep breath. "I think whatever is after her is able to get to her, and it's draining the power from her."

They put Mackenzie in the fort that El stayed in. Mike and El stayed by her side the whole night. Neither of them getting any sleep themselves, they stayed up worrying about her.

In the morning, Mak was greeted by her family. Ever since she was a baby, and even before, everyone in this room (plus an additional few people) were her family. She immediately looked at her parents and gave them an annoyed look. Mike look at her shrugged with a smile. El came over to her and started asking her how she was feeling. She was a little overwhelmed.

The party needed to go see Mr. Clarke to ask questions about time travel and how it can affect a human. They needed to know how to take care of Mackenzie.

"Do you know who Steve is?" Will asked.

"Harrington!?" She yelled excitingly.
