Barry adjusted his tie's length and turned his collar down. He sighed heavily, looking at the mirror in front of him.
"Hey, Bar, you ready to go?" Iris poked her head into the room.
Barry pursed his lips, running a finger over his eyebags. They were agonizingly noticeable. Barry turned around, "Do you have something that can cover this up?"
"Not in your skin color" Iris shook her head, "Sorry, Barry"
Barry exhaled loudly through his mouth, "It's alright. Let's get tonight over with"
"Cheer up. Maybe you won't see her there" Iris furrowed her eyebrows.
Barry laughed dryly, "I highly doubt it"
"Ready to go, yeah?" Joe asked when the pair walked down the stairs. Iris nodded in response.
Barry had been dreading this event for weeks. CCPD was hosting a Black and White Gala Fundraiser and even though Barry and Danica, his ex-girlfriend, had done a good job at avoiding each other at the precinct, he knew there was no way to avoid her at the gala. He didn't want to break up with his girlfriend, but he felt trapped. Barry felt there was no other way to keep Dani safe from Zoom. However, seeing as Danica didn't know of Barry's superhero life, he had to come up with a lie. She immediately knew it was a bullshit excuse.
Barry stepped out of the passenger seat. While they made their way to the ballroom, Barry felt Iris link their arms.
"Cheer up a little, Bar. You'll be okay" Iris squeezed his arm.
Barry faked a smile and they entered the ballroom together, Joe walking on the right of his daughter.
As soon as Barry stepped inside the ballroom, he spotted Dani, standing near a table, talking and laughing with two of the female detectives who worked at CCPD. Barry's tensed shoulders slumped.
Of course, she moved on already. Barry hadn't seen Danica since the day they broke up. He had been too scared to. He was scared that he would see Dani cry. He was scared he'd cave, apologize, get her back, and put her in danger with Zoom. But she didn't seem sad and she sure as hell wasn't crying.Danica was looking brand new.
"Come on, Bar" Iris tugged on Barry's arm. Iris pulled Barry to the opposite side of the room from where Dani was standing with her friends. While he was walking by, attempting to make a conversation with Iris, he caught Dani glance at him. He looked back and his eyes followed his ex as he walked further away. She didn't bother looking twice.
