You leaned over the rails, gazing out onto the sea. You hoped, that by some heavenly miracle, you would have a reason to turn your ship around and to never sail in this direction ever again.
You enjoyed your freedom and your adventures at sea. The serenity they had brought you made you realize just how much you loathed where you were before.
You didn't understand why you HAD to go back, after all, you fulfilled the terms and conditions of you contract. Either way, there was nothing he could say or do to make you reconsider and stay on that miserable island. Even if the letter was from your mentor, you couldn't shake the feeling that HE had wrote it.
Letting out an exasperated sigh, you slumped forward.
Glancing to the port side of the ship, you could see a pod of a Scauldrons making their way across the sea. They dove in and out of the waves until finally vanishing into the deep blue waters.
You wished you could jump in and disappear as well. You let your imagination roam as you wondered what secrets lies beneath you.
It wasn't until you hear your first mate call out that you realized you had disassociated for some time. You gave him an apologetic smile and asked him to repeat himself.
"I'm guessing yer still upset. "
"Aye, I am. In fact, I'm not sure if I'm upset, anxious or if I should jump overboard."
"Aw captain, you know your crew would be lost without you."
"As heartwarming the thought is, I still would rather disappear than return to the island."
He chuckled, "why do y'a want to avoid this place so badly?"
"The island has always been too loud and too chaotic. I prefer the quiet and calmness of the ocean."
He snickered, "You enjoy peace and quiet? I'm sorry captain, but I just don't believe you."
"Oh yeah. Why not?"
He pointed to the sunbathing Changewing. "You own the most rambunctious and mischievous beast I have yet to meet. And let's not forget to mention the battle scars that you and she have." You laughed, " You and and that bloody Changewing are as chaotic as you can get. Ya know, she tried to push me overboard today? I swear she's trying to get rid of me!"
You giggled and made your way towards your dragon.
"Oh John, you know she didn't mean to. Just look at the cute little face", you lifted her head, "does this look like a dangerous creature?" Grunting, he turned his back to you.
SpitFire had been your dragon for over 10 years. You and her had met roughly around the time your training as a hunter began. She was smaller than your average Changewing , but nonetheless feisty.
Her red and orange scales shined like fire in the morning light. The vibrant colours contrasted the multitude of scar covering her body. They were the physical proof of the many challenges the both of you had faced over the course of these past 3 years.
She purred contently as you scratched underneath her chin. You wondered why she seemed so content sailing back to the island. She didn't enjoy the hunters company. Especially after what happened the last time you were both there.
You returned to John's side. Closing your eyes, you let the salty air to consume your senses. Just before you could finally relax, you heard your helmsman call out to you.
