Emmeline's pov.
I sigh as I watch my cousin drive off. He was supposed to drive me to the high school, since my parents went to work early, their first day of work since we moved in a few days ago. I sigh but make my way to the high school, knowing where it is since I have a photographic memory and I asked my mom to show me a map of the town, and also show me where the school was our first day in town. I made it to the school with 30 minutes to spare, so I make it to the office, memorizing another map from what Tommy showed me. The nice receptionist gave me my schedule, locker number and combination, and an extra map, even though I told her it was unnecessary. I make my way to my locker, finding Tommy leaning near it with his Girlfriend, Carol, and a few of his friends I didn't know. One of them was leaning right on my locker. I don't want to make Tommy upset, so I tap the boy's shoulder and politely points at my locker.
"Huh?" The guys immediately turned to me with a scowl on his face.
I didn't speak, since I haven't used my voice in a long time, and it hurt to use it most of the time. He backed up a bit, not understanding, so I tapped the locker then pointing to myself. He backed up enough to let me open it and I put away my new textbooks and schedule and the papers the woman gave me that I didn't need.
"Emma, really?" Tommy scoffs, obviously annoyed at me.
"I'm... sorry..." I whisper out and he just shakes his head.
"Cmon guys, let's get away from my freak of a cousin." Tommy says.
"Bye freak." Carol waves, wrapping her arm around Tommy as they leave, his other friends following except for the boy who was on my locker.
"Are you new?" He asks and I nod slowly, eyes to the ground. I close my locker and make sure it's locked up again. "I'm Billy Hargrove."
I don't say anything and I hear the bell ring as Tommy called out for Billy. He turns to look at my cousin and I hurry off and out of sight before he turned back to where I had been. I go to my first class, giving the teacher a slip that said it hurt for me to talk, and they just told me to sit in the back, where there were a lot of empty seats. When the class comes in, I find that there were empty seats in the back because the class was small, and we had a few rows of extra seats. I keep my head down as the class all chat together. This was an elective class, and obviously the teacher was laid back and didn't actually teach. So, I grabbed out a sketchbook and began to sketch a wolf onto a blank page. I ignored the person who took up the seat beside me until they tapped on the table, close to my book.
"Hey, you never told me your name." The guy says. I look and see Billy.
"Emm..." my voice gets hoarse and I clear my throat. "Emmeline Hale."
"What's up with your voice?" Billy asks curiously and I just hand him the slip I was going to give each of my teachers. "Oh... what happened?"
I send him a weird look, not understanding why he wanted to know, when Tommy would probably just spout nonsense about me being in some freak accident before I came back to my parents or something.
"Hey, if you don't wanna talk about it, it's fine." Billy shrugs.
This is when I really take in his features. His blonde, mullet hair, his tan complexion, and his striking blue eyes. When I meet his eyes, I completely freeze. I'm no longer held to the earth by gravity. Any and all strings that seemed to connect me to earth were all cut, and I began to float into space, but then chains began to attach themselves to me and earth, and I knew it wasn't really the chains holding me... it was him... he was the one holding me down to earth... I knew I would do anything for him.
"Emmeline? Everything okay?" Billy asks worriedly.
"Yeah..." my voice didn't seem as hoarse as before, more like it used to. "I... I just noticed..." I trail off slightly. "You have pretty eyes..."
"Heh, thanks?" He chuckles softly. "What's your next class?"
"Oh... math." I tell him, not hesitating due to my photographic memory.
"Me too, wanna skip?" He offers in a whisper and I nod.
"I... don't have to go..." I mumble, closing my sketch book.
"You sure? It's your first day here after all." Billy teases.
"Photo... graphic memory." I breath, not looking away from him.
"Huh, that's cool... I guess." He shrugs. He didn't know what it is.
"It... it means I remember anything and everything I see." I say, my voice clearing up somewhat. "Would you still like to... skip?"
"Yeah. Let's go." He says after the bell rings, ending our first class.
I follow him as he leads me to his car, a lovely blue Camero. I smile as I trail my hand over the smooth paint on the passenger side. He unlocks it and we get in. He starts the car and speeds out of the school campus and down the roads. He takes me to his house, where his parents were gone, and he treated me to lunch at the diner down the road. I laugh as he dances to some of the music we were listening to in his room.
"Billy..." I giggle, out of breath, as I sit on his bed, him plopping down face first right beside me. I smile before combing my fingers in his hair.
"We should probably get back to school, I need to pick up my Dipshit of a stepsister, Max, and Tommy's probably wondering where you are." Billy says, getting up and putting his shoes on and handing me mine.
"No. Tommy wouldn't care." I shake my head, tying up my shoes.
"Isn't he giving you rides to and from school?" Billy asks.
"No. I walked to school today. He doesn't care." I shrug gently.
"Oh." Billy helps me up and we go to his car and head to the middle school across the street from the high school. "I can drive you from now on, you know, if you want and if you don't mind Max."
"I... I'd like that..." I say, smiling out the window slightly. We parked outside the school, still having five minutes till classes were over, and Billy got out and smoked a cigarette while he leaned against his car. I sat inside, smiling brightly to myself. "Billy... is my gravity..."
