Emmeline's POV.

November 1st.

The day after Halloween I found myself waiting with Billy and his potential new one night stand. We were waiting on Max, who hadn't left her school yet. I was getting more anxious by the minute and finally caved in. I ran to the school, shouting at Billy over my shoulder.

"Go on ahead! I'll make sure she gets home safe!" I yell before going in.

I ran throughout the halls, seeing teachers and students all leaving. I see Dustin and grab him by the shoulder, almost harshly due to my strength and the speed I had grabbed him. He looked up at me, scared.

"Sorry, have you seen Max?" I ask the boy and he relaxes slightly.

"Yeah, she's helping us look for my lost... pet..." He says hesitantly.

"Oh, I can help. I have a great sense of smell." I smile before holding my hand out. "Just give me anything with its scent on it. Is it only you and Max looking? Or are there any other kids I should be worried about?"

"Uh, Lucas and our two other friends are looking too, Mike Wheeler and Will Byers." Dustin explains as he hands me a fake ghost trap.

"Can they keep a secret? Like a really big one?" I ask, sniffing the trap.

"Yeah, why?" Dustin asks suspiciously. I shrug before walking into the bathroom really quick. I lock the door before he followed me in.

"When I scratch the door, open it for me, would ya? Promise me that there are no others in the school." I tell him, undressing.

"Umm, there's just us six right now. Everyone else left." Dustin says.

"Ok. Radio your friends and tell them what your about to see, and make sure to tell them I'm friendly and I want to help." I say before shifting.

"Okay?" Dustin sounds confused as I scratch the door and he opens it. He screams and falls back at my form. "Holy shit! You're... you're the!!!"

"Dustin?! What's going on!" Lucas yells as he runs around the corner.

"Wait! Lucas!" I hear Max as she runs after him. They both stop, seeing me.

"That thing is back?! And in our school?!" Lucas yells loudly.

"Wait! You guys! It's Emmeline!" Dustin tells them, getting over the shock of finding out. "She's here to help us find Dart."

"Emmy?" Max asks, slowly approaching as Lucas tries and fails to pull her back and away from me, trying to protect her. "Is it you?"

I can't speak like a human in this form, so I nod my head and muzzle her outstretched hand. She holds my big furry wolf head in both hands as I send a big toothy wolf smile her way. She giggles before we get back to work. Lucas and Max take one way, looking for Dart, and I sniff around and look with Dustin. We make it to a bathroom and Dustin hides the slimy creature in his hat.

"Please don't tell the others, Emmeline. I want to protect Dart..."

I nod my head hesitantly before Max and the others come and find that Darts not here anymore. They then search for Will, since he ran out before we had got to the bathroom Dart was in. I sniff for the scared kid, and am the first to find him in the schools field. He was frozen and seemed to be in some kind of trance, but it looked worse than that. My fur stood on end, and I could feel a dark aura around the boy and myself. His mom and friends showed up quickly. His mom was scared at the sight of me until Max and the boys told her that I was Max's overgrown pet wolf. Obviously they didn't wanna tell her the truth, they did promise to keep my secret, so I'm glad.

As they kept their promise, i kept mine that I made to Billy, and made sure Max got home safe. She had held her skateboard on her lap as she rode on my back while I ran through the woods toward her house. I didn't bother shifting back and walking her up, or going and making sure she made it to her room. I didn't want to know what Billy and that girl were doing, and I was slightly uncomfortable letting Max go in, knowing the girl was still there. I went home and found my parents weren't home, again, but I could see Tommy's car in the drive way. I hurried into my room and locked the outside door before shifting and changing. I could hear him banging against my door that led upstairs.

"One second!" I yell, putting on my shirt before running up the stairs and unlocking the door. He opened it angrily before pushing me down.

"I can't believe you, you freak!" Tommy screeches as he makes his way down the stairs after my fallen form. He kicks my stomach a few times in anger. He'd done this before to me, when I'd come over for the summers, or when he'd come over to our house back in the city. He only ever did it when he was angry and neither of our parents were home.

"What's wrong..." I mumbled softly as he glares down at me.

"You think you can be buddies with Billy?! He's my friend, not yours! He doesn't want to be friends with some freak like you! I don't know how your parents can even live under the same room as you, you freak!" He kicked my sides and legs, making sure the bruises and cuts wouldn't be seen. "That's why you live down here!"

I don't fight back, even though I know I'm stronger than he is. I just take the hits, knowing I'd heal in a day or two. I didn't really mind his... abuse, it was better than him going and finding someone else to abuse, like his girlfriend. I didn't like Carol, but that didn't mean I wanted Tommy to go and abuse her. I knew that I could survive no matter what he does to me, she probably wouldn't. Not long after he'd started the kicks and punches, we head my parents' car stop in the driveway. He gave me one last kick before heading upstairs and acting like nothing happened. I just got up from the floor, feeling only a bit of pain, and went up the stairs to lock my door before laying in bed to allow my body to heal.
