"What are we doing here?" Hayley asked for the 100th time.
"Finding Nemo," I answered back.
Hayley frowned again.
"We can't find Nemo when he doesn't live on land. Nemo will never be found here."
I smiled a bit, enjoying her distress.
"How do you know Nemo can't be on land?"
Hayley slapped my arm painfully.
"You must be really stupid or something," she said, hitting me again. "Nemo's a fucking fish and fishes don't live on land."
I wiggled my eyebrows.
"Or do they?" She hit her palm on my back.
"That's it! I'm leaving!" She spun on her heel and began to race down the stairs.
"Hayley! Wait up!" I caught up with her and grabbed her hand.
"I'm sorry," I said, biting my lip.
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear which she didn't realize made her look really sexy.
"So what are we doing in school on a Saturday?" She asked, her voice a bit softer.
I swallowed.
"Let me show you. Please." She furrowed her brows.
"Fine."
I took her hand and led her to the library. As soon as we got in, she stood in shock.
"Wh-what is going on?"
The small clearing of tables and chairs we were in was decorated with our pictures and our song as besties was playing on a stereo set on top of a table. I had also strung some lights around the place as the main light fixtures were turned off.
"Did you do this?" I didn't speak, just faced her and smiled. She was touched.
"Oh, Brent..." And she hugged me tightly. I melted into her hug, smiling into her hair. When I released her, she looked conflicted.
"But why?" And then she gave a short laugh "Today isn't our Friend-versary, you know."
I laughed.
"I know, but- today is a special day." Her eyebrows shot up.
"What's happening today?" I smiled.
"Sit first." She sat down across the stereo set and looked at me.
"Explanation?" I swallowed.
"Do you remember? This is where -"
"- we first kissed." She completed, her eyes downward. I cleared my throat.
"I'm glad you remember." She looked up.
"How could I forget?" There was something in her eyes I couldn't pin down when she looked up.
"Kayley, that was when I knew that I like you. As more than a friend," I was rushing over my words "Even if you don't like me in the same way, I understand. I'll give you time. I just hope-" I cast my eyes downwards "- I hope this confession doesn't ruin our friendship."
When I looked up again, her eyes were shining as she smiled.
"Brent, of course I like you the same way. I think I always have. I was just waiting for the right time and I was scared of losing our friendship."
My own smile lit up my whole face.
"I'm so glad to hear that, Kayley. I like you."
She took a deep breath before saying: "I like you too."
And like that, I leaned in and we kissed.
