It's Friday which means we get to find out who got cut from the team. Everyone has been doing fairly well at tryouts so making cuts definitely will be hard. I have my picks but I have no say in what happens.
My dad allowed me to finally take my own car to school. It wasn't too hard to convince him. He didn't like the fact that I walked to school by myself, so driving myself actually put him at ease.
Once I got to school I parked in the student section and got out. The school itself was pretty self-explanatory. In a way, it looked like a college. It had the main building where most of the classes were held, one dormitory on each side of the main building, and all of the sports fields behind it all.
I got to my first class and sat where I normally sit. Seconds later the boys arrive and take their seats. For some reason they've been sitting in the same seats they did on my first day. I'm not really complaining though because Justin and Kai have been keeping me company.
None of them were in my second-period class though which I was thankful for. I am glad to say that I've made a friend who doesn't want to be friends with me because of who my dad is or that I'm "friends" with the four boys. They are all apparently known by everyone in the school as the "untouchable." Her name is Veronica. I've been sitting with her and River at lunch.
It was a little awkward at lunch on the second day. I had to introduce them and they don't have much in common. After we all got past the awkwardness it was fine.
I had most of my classes with River including my last period class. Once the bell rang for the end of the day we booked it out of the school. River walked with me to my car to get my stuff then we went to the baseball shed. The baseball shed holds all of the equipment and everyone's bags that stay on campus.
We only practiced for an hour since my dad wanted to talk to everyone separately afterward to tell them if they got in or not. I was one of the first to talk to him because of my last name. He told me that there wasn't much to talk about and that he'd talk to me at home. He gave me a piece of paper explaining how the season will go and the schedule. I guess since the conversation was shorter all of them thought I didn't make it. Most of them started laughing their asses off.
"What are you guys laughing about? I'm on the team," I said while smirking and showing them the paper.
All of them stopped laughing and just looked at me dumbfounded. I would say that I felt bad for the ones that didn't make it but I'm not. All of the ones that didn't make it laughed at me and thought that I wasn't going to make it.
Once everyone was talked to we all sat down by the first baseline while my dad stood at the pitcher's mound with the box of uniforms. He made everyone give back their uniforms until the end of tryouts so if someone didn't make the team they wouldn't try and steal them.
"I'm going to call you up and give you the uniform. I will also tell you the position you will be playing for this season. River Stewart. Number 00. You will be playing third for me this year. Do you think you can handle that?"
River looks at me in disbelief before saying "Yes coach. Thank you."
"Next Is Justin Johnson. Number 1. You'll be starting catcher until further notice. Violet Baker. You should be feeling good. You beat out six guys for this spot. You'll be number 4 and battling for starting pitcher. Good luck to you."
He kept calling names after names. I didn't pay too much attention to most of them. I only listened to a couple that caught my interest.
"Jaxson Brooks. Lucky 7. I'll need you to be ready to catch at any point when Justin isn't doing too hot. I'm counting on you. Xavier Clark. Number 17. I played with your dad a while back. I hope you can live up to your legacy. You'll be playing second."
I couldn't help but feel bad for Xavier. Sure I have a dad who was in the major leagues, but no one knows that I'm his daughter. I still have a lot more pressure considering he's my coach now and I have to make sure I do my very best to make him proud. With Xavier it's different. Everyone knows who his dad is. They are going to expect so much more from him.
"Zander Osborn. My favorite number 18. You'll be fighting for starting pitcher. Don't think I won't bench you though. If I hear you say one bad thing about any of your teammates you will be benched, and that goes for all of you. Am I understood?"
Everyone shook their heads not able to think of anything to say.
"Last is Kai Anderson. Number 22. I can tell that you are going to be an amazing shortstop. That is everyone. Our first game is on Wednesday. You may all go home."
River insisted that he walk me to my car, so I waited outside the field for him to put his bag in the shed. Once he comes back we make our way to my car.
"Why don't you live on campus? It's really odd that you don't stay on campus. I thought it was a mandatory thing?" River asks me.
"I don't know. My house isn't that far away so maybe they just thought it wasn't a big deal."
"Oh, well you should think about it. It would be a lot easier to hang out. Plus you'd get to wake up later than what you usually do. I think that's a win right there."
"I'll think about it. I have to go. My dad will be mad if I'm not home soon."
"Okay. I'll text you."
After we said our goodbyes I got in my car and headed home.
I was stopped at a stoplight on my way home. I was the only one there until a Ferrari pulled up next to me. The person in the car revved their engine and then rolled down the passenger side window. Since he rolled down his window I rolled down mine because he obviously wanted to talk.
"Oh damn you are a girl," the guy said. He was probably in his early twenties. He didn't look that old.
"And?" I questioned him not knowing how to take what he just said.
"I was going to ask if you wanted to race, but now that I know you are a girl there is not even a challenge involved."
"You are on. If I win, you have to get me in contact with the person who runs the races here," I said overly confident.
"Yeah sure, but you aren't going to win. If I win then you have to come home with me tonight," he said with a smirk.
"Okay, you are on. When the light turns green we go. The finish line will be to the next stoplight."
He nodded his head and rolled up his window. I revved my engine and got ready to win.
The light turned green and we were off. He was ahead of me by a couple of inches. I will let him have the satisfaction for now and then pass him right before the stoplight. That is exactly what happened.
We both pulled into the parking lot that was right after the light and got out of our cars. I haven't had a race in forever. I forgot how it felt to win.
"Damn girl you are actually good," he exclaimed with astonishment in his voice.
"You really shouldn't judge a book by its cover or that cover will sweep you on your ass" I proclaimed
"I have never heard someone say it like that before. My name is Jordan" he says as he reaches his hand out to shake mine.
"Xephor, but my racing name is X.B. I'd appreciate it if you kept my real name out of it though," I said nonchalantly.
Jordan promised he'd keep my identity a secret. He also told me that there were races tomorrow night and that he'd get me in one.
