Once, a king's wife got caught sleeping with a servant. The king was furious. He had been betrayed. This was treachery. He didn't listen to any argument, and ordered his men to have both his wife's and the servant's head chopped off.
No one dared say anything. The queen was caught. There were witnesses.
But there was one man, a wazir who didn't accept it. He thought the queen and the servant were innocent. Even though they were caught sleeping in the bed in the royal chambers, there must be an explanation.
This wazir was the king's most intelligent man. He told the king "sire, this couldn't be the truth"
The king laughed at that.
"How can it not be?" The king demanded. "The maids saw them. I heard with my own two ears that the maids were talking of it!"
"Well, What's seen and heard, sire, isn't always true" said the wazir.
The king refused to accept that. How can seeing and hearing not be enough to believe? His wife had been cheating on him. There was proof. Witnesses.
But still, the wazir said that he could prove that it was just allegation. The king, despite his fury, gave the wazir a chance. And told him that if he fails, he'll be beheaded too.
So the wazir requested the queen and the servant be bought to the court. When the servant came the wazir asked him "what happened?"
The servant explained. "Your majesty, I was cleaning the chambers. I was so tired, I had been working all day. So when I dusted the bed frame, I thought to my self, 'there is no one here, I can surely take a small nap'. So, your majesty, I fell asleep on your bed."
Then the king's wife was asked. She replied, "when I entered the royal chambers, my king, I thought it was you asleep under the covers. So I layed down and slept beside who I thought was you. I would never betray you, my king."
The king was shocked. Those maids and servants who had seen it with their own two eyes were wrong.
The queen and the servant were forgiven. And wazir got granted a great fortune.
It's true. That seeing and hearing isn't believing. If one gets to know something, he should always confirm the source. Maybe what we see and what we hear is wrong. Maybe we take a step and it becomes a great mistake, and we don't even realise it's a mistake.
Always remember, Seeing is not believing.
