Once I got on the stage and started singing the songs that were so familiar, my nerves calmed down and I had a lot of fun. I sang two of Demi's songs, which I don't think she had been expecting. The crowd seemed to really enjoy my set more and more as the festival passed by and I got an urgent text from Jeanie telling me to check my Instagram followers.
I didn't know why that was so urgent, but I opened the app, liked Demi's most recent post, and went to my profile.
My jaw dropped. I didn't even remember seeing 900,000, and now I had one million followers. Anxiety rose up in my chest and made it feel tight as I thought about posting a thank you. I was sitting on my bed in the hotel room and I jumped when I heard Demi calling my name. I crossed over into her room and she and Maia stood close together with huge and mischievous grins on their faces.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"We got you a little something," Demi answered. They both stepped off to the side, revealing a cart with a cake on it. I walked up to it and on top, the cake read "Happy 1 Million."
"Aw, guys! I was just wondering what I was going to post." I pulled up my camera and snapped a few pictures.
"Well, I'm happy we can give you content," Maia said, laughing. "Speaking of, have you seen the amount of requests for you to start a YouTube channel?"
I internally groaned. "Yeah, but I don't know if I should. I don't wanna put all that stress on myself to put out videos and work on my music."
Demi furrowed her brow. "You don't have to worry about making crazy videos. You can vlog and do other things when you have time. And, just an idea, you can post covers so more people can hear you and get excited to hear your music."
Maia nodded. "That's really smart. Listen to her. But if you really don't want to do it, that's totally fine.
I decided to take some time to think about it and with the festival being over, we headed home the next day.
It felt so good to be back in my room and play games to take my mind off everything for a bit. My mind wandered to Jay. She wanted to go to school for art, but I didn't know how far away she would be. Jordan and her parents were helping her find a school, but I didn't talk to them enough to know what was going on.
Finally, after a crazy idea popped into my head, I saved and quit my game and went to find Demi and Maia. They were in the living room, their bags still at the bottom of the stairs, drinking what smelled like tea.
"Guys, I had an idea and I need to know I'm not crazy for thinking it," I said, both of them jumping slightly and turning to look at me.
"Sit down. What's wrong?" Demi asked, setting her mug on the table. I sat on the couch and took in a deep breath.
"Nothing really, it's just... I was thinking about Jay and I know she wants to go to college but I don't know where. I wanted to ask Jordan what her options are and... and get an apartment for us when she gets out of rehab."
My moms stared blankly before smiling.
"Rosie, that's great!" Demi exclaimed.
I hesitated and she grew worried. "But I don't think I'm ready to live on my own."
She got up and sat next to me, wrapping one arm around my shoulders. "That's okay. You find out where she's going to school, and Maia and I will help with the apartment. You'll always have a place here, okay?"
Maia smiled. "And you're not crazy," she added.
"Thanks. There's actually one other thing I've been needing to talk about."
