"Our Billy boy wasn't born evil. Oh no. He was made one after years of systematic abuse."
-Hannibal Lecter
Her name was Jennifer Gumb. Chased by boys all her life for her classic bombshell beauty. Some compared her to Marilyn Monroe on a good day. But her controlling parents discouraged her dreams and pushed their religious values onto the Scarlette. She could no longer stay trapped in that small town, so she ran off to California to become an actress in the 70s. It was a hard lesson to learn that L.A. was filled with more beautiful trained actresses who could afford headshots and agents. She had to survive on waitressing tips and endless dates with drunks who paid for all her meals.
After 2 years of disappointment, Jennifer caught a big break when a director stopped by her bar. He noticed her right away and flirted every time she refilled his drink," You look like you could be a movie star, hun."
She giggled," Don't think I haven't been trying."
"This is your lucky day," he told her. He explained he was a director looking for a blonde leading lady. She looked perfect for the part. He inquired about her headshots. She had a few professional photos left in her apartment. He offered to follow her home and take one directly to his producer. It was a dream come true. She invited him to her place under false pretenses. It only took him an hour of sweet-talking and promises to build her career to get her in bed. By morning he was gone without her picture. She had never felt so used.
Most women quit their bad habits when they learn they're pregnant but for Jennifer, she started drinking wishing the fetus in her womb would disappear. She tried weed to forget and cocaine to cause an abortion but it still kept growing. After nine months of hating herself, she gave birth to a boy. Her figure was ruined and blemished by stretch marks. The alcohol and drugs had ruined her complexion. She was a mess. The nurse brought in her newborn son wrapped in a blue knitted blanket," Hi, mommy. Wanna see your son?"
She looked down at him believing he was the ugliest baby she had ever seen. She couldn't see the cuteness of his warped nose and crossed eyes. He was a complete stranger she felt nothing for. The nurse looked down at his birth certificate," What's his name?"
" James," she told her.
The nurse double checked the birth certificate," Whoops. His name is misspelled on here. They forgot the 'S'. I can bring you the forms again to fill out."
" No. It doesn't matter."
" Of course it does. It's your baby's name. That's important."
Jennifer yanked his birth certificate out the nurse's hand," I said it doesn't matter. Take him back and get out."
The nurse carried the baby out feeling sorry for them both. Jennifer rolled away from the door wondering what her life was going to be like with him in it. It would take her three years to finally give him away to the system and pretend he never existed.
