July 3rd
"Em you are never going to believe what happened!" Lee screamed into the phone. It was a Thursday night around seven and Em just woke up from her second nap of the day. She had been exhausted from her medicine.
"Lee, I was just peacefully sleeping and you are now screaming in my ear. What could possibly be so important?" Em asked.
"Well, Jordan asked me if I wanted to go to the annual Fourth of July party with her tomorrow!" Lee said. Em was suddenly wide awake as she sat up in bed.
"The annual Fourth of July party?" Em asked in shock. The annual Fourth of July party was the biggest party of the year. It was a well-known spot for kids to get drunk and swipe the v-card. Parties weren't Lee's thing, Em was more than surprised at the news.
"You're actually gonna go?" Em asked.
"Yeah, of course I want to go. Jordan did ask me," She said. Em knew she was smirking by the sound of her voice. Jordan Fischer has been Lee's crush forever. She practically has been in love with her since the seventh grade.
"I know but parties aren't your thing. Besides, aren't you worried someone will say something?" Em asked. The last time Lee and Jordan had any real connection was the end of eighth grade. They were all at Vickie Woods' graduation pool party. They were playing spin the bottle and Jordan spun and landed on Lee. They both leaned in until Jordan pulled back laughing. Lee told everyone that she was just kidding and that she wasn't actually going to kiss her. All of the kids in their graduating class tormented her after that. So, she took Vickie's brother Jason to the graduation dance in hopes of covering it up.
"Not really. We are going as just friends and there will be more people going with us. It's not just is," Lee said. Em sighed, she didn't have a good feeling about this party.
"Well, be safe and have fun," She said. Lee squealed so loud that it caused Em to pull her phone away from her ear.
"Yes! I'm so excited. I'll text you tomorrow, love you," Lee said quickly.
"Love you too, Lee," Em said as she hung up the phone.
She sighed as she fell back onto her bed. She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep but the feeling in her stomach kept her awake. She was worried about Lee going to a party, especially with Jordan. She picked up her phone and called the only person she could talk to about this.
"Hey, Emmy, what's up," Aiden said through the phone. She rolled her eyes and groaned loudly.
"Hey, AD, can you hang out?" She asked.
"Yeah, sure. Is everything okay?" He asked.
"I just want to talk to you about something. Can we go to Andy's?" She asked. Andy's was a diner that everyone went to. It was just outside of Downtown Philly, just fifteen minutes from where Em and her friends lived.
"You're scaring me but of course. I'll pick you up in ten?" He asked.
"Yeah that's perfect," She answered.
"Okay see you then, love you," He said. Hear heart dropped and her breathing nearly stopped. Sure, they have used the 'L' word but she still almost dropped dead every timer she heard him say it.
"Love you too, AD," She said. She smiled and hung up. The warm, fuzzy feeling she got whenever she talked to Aiden was there when she got out of bed. She quickly changed into jeans and a shirt. She was definitely not going to wear the ugly clothes she had been wearing around the house all day. She put shoes on and ran downstairs.
Lily was in her normal spot. She laid on the couch with her headphones in as she watched a video on her iPad. It was a summer night and she spent in inside doing nothing. She rolled her eyes at her sister before looking out the front door. Mark was out in the driveway washing his bright red truck. She walked into the kitchen to find her mom as she attempted to cook something.
"Hey, mom," Em said as she entered the kitchen. Her mother turned her attention towards her as she almost dropped what she was cooking. Her mom was not the best cook.
"Hey, Em," Her mom said with a smile. "What's up?"
"I was just letting you know that I'm going to Andy's with Aiden," Em said. Her mother's expression changed immediately to worry.
"Are you sure you'll be okay?" Her mom asked. Em smiled and nodded even though something in her gut was warning her.
"I'll be fine. Besides, AD will be with me," Em said. Her mom smirked and nodded. She always knew about Em's huge crush on Aiden?
"Okay, call me if you need anything. I'll be home until twelve. I have work tonight," Her mom said as she turned back to cooking. Em frowned but nodded. She hugged her mom and told her she loved her before she left the kitchen and walked out the front door.
"Hi, Marky," Em said teasingly as she took a seat on the front step. Her brother glared at her and pointed the house at her, splashing her slightly.
"Where you off to?" Mark asked as he turned the hose off, put it down, and sat down next to Em.
"About to go to Andy's with AD," She said. Mark looked over at her and smirked.
"So, like a date?" Mark asked playfully. Em rolled her eyes and shoved Mark in the side.
"No dummy. Aiden doesn't like me like that," Em said as she folded her arms across her chest. Mark scoffed loudly and gave his sister a dirty look.
"I have never met someone more oblivious than you," Mark said. Em sighed and slouched down. Everyone always told her that. From her mom to Lily to even her teachers. But Em knew he would never love her the way she loved him and nothing hurt her more.
"Why are you going to Andy's then?" Mark asked after a couple moments of silence.
"Ashley's going to a party," Em said which caused Mark to gasp loudly.
"Ashley Montanez at a party? Weird," Mark mumbled to himself. Em shook he rhead and laughed.
"I have a bad feeling about this," Em said.
"Is it the Fourth of July party?" Mark asked. When Em nodded, he sighed loudly. Mark went to that party twice. The stories he told Em about what happened in those woods gave her a good reason to worry about Lee going.
"She's only going because Jordan invited her," Em said.
"I just hope she's smart tomorrow and doesn't do anything stupid. I swear to God if I get a call from her asking me to pick her up because she's black out drunk, I will kill her," Mark said as he leaned back and laid down on the ground. Em laughed at the thought of Lee drunk. she was already crazy and drunk off life as it is. She couldn't even imagine her with a couple in her.
Aiden Devereux pulled into Em's driveway. Aiden honked the horn which caused Mark to fly up from his spot on the ground.
"You little shit!" Mark yelled out but didn't bother to run toward the car. He honked again and Em could see him laughing from the driver's seat.
"Aw, Marky! Looks like it's the old age again," AD yelled as he hung out the window. With Aiden's worss, Mark flew up and sprinted toward him. Aiden struggled to get his body back into the car. Mark grabbed him and got him in a choke hold before he could escape. Em laughed hysterically as she hopped into the passenger seat.
"Bye, Mark," Em waved as he finally let go of Aiden. Mark laughed as he tapped Aiden on the back of the head. Aiden groaned loudly.
"Bye, Marky!" Aiden said smirking. Mark attempted to leap toward the car but Aiden backed up and sped off in the direction of Andy's just in time.
