Tip 2: Hooking Readers

There are 2 main ways to do this: covers and summaries. A lot of people think that the cover is supposed to reflect what is inside the story. This, against popular belief, is wrong. The cover is supposed to hook readers. It is supposed to catch someone's eye and intrigue them. The summary is what is going to reflect the story. Once someone sees a cover, the flip the book to read the summary to see if they would be interested.
Even though you want your cover to be intriguing rather than explain the whole story, you want it to fit. One way to do this is using an item. For example, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. You could do a cover with just the stone on it. People would be interested and it fits the story.
The summary is supposed to explain what the story is about, but not spoil it. Going back to Harry Potter, it would be really annoying if the summary said: Harry Potter is a wizard who goes to a magic school and makes new friends. Even though that is pretty accurate, it is boring and spoiling.
So, get a cover that is intriguing and fits your book, and a summary that fits your book and is intriguing. The two go hand in hand.
