Tip 9: Don't Copy Someone Else

This one may sound obvious, but I think it fits well in this list. Much like finding your own style rather than using someone else's, don't copy someone's ideas.
A lot- A LOT of authors base their story on someone else's. Many people write fan fictions. Those are based on an already made story. We never try to copy, but knowing and loving a story might show in our work. If you love the Harry Potter, you might write about a magic school. It may seem unique to you, but to everyone else it's just a knock off version of Harry Potter.
Use your imagination, not anyone else's. Not only is it boring to read most of the time, copying is illegal. It's called plagiarism. This is a serious crime and may result in prison. So, before publishing your story, make sure it really is something unique.
It is also rude to the original author. If you copy them, it might seem to them like you're trying to rival their work with a better version of their idea. They might think you are trying to take credit for their work. Either way, it is rude and illegal. Just don't copy, and keep your story original.
