Tip 5: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

We are all uncomfortable or insecure about something. A lot of times we avoid it in our writing. But that is the wrong mentality. It is much like facing your fears, we need to face our insecurities.
As an author, this is one of the hardest things to do. If you had a bad childhood, you might not want to write about a child. But if your uncomfortable with something, it means that it is probably got content.
This isn't always the case though. If you go to extreme with this one, you may overdo your story. It might make your readers uncomfortable. This one takes practice and practice to master. But if you over think this tip, it may work into your story where it doesn't fit.
Another thing to keep in mind is to not ruin yourself trying to write about an uncomfortable thing. Yes, you should push yourself to face it. Yes, you should be writing it. But not to the point where you are more uncomfortable with it than before. You need to be careful as to what is a good point to fit things into your story. If your story is about a woman's love life, you may not want to include something about a child. It is all in the valence of what fits into your story. Avoid unneeded information.
