Chapter Four
( Two Years Earlier )
We had just got out of school. Ed stayed after for tutoring and I stayed for art club for an hour. We got home around four or five. Ed pulled into the driveway. Both mom and dads vehicles were still there. We looked at each other and walked inside.
"Mom! Dad!" Ed yells.
"Where are they?" Ed asks me as if I know.
Mom wrote articles for the local paper, which had her working at home most of the time. Dad had to go to the family company and work there but today was Friday. He got home at five, right when we got home from school. They didn't answer us. Which made us worry. The fridge bared no note. Our phones no messages of their whereabouts.
"Maybe they had a business dinner to attend too?" Ed asks.
I shake my head. "Mom would of left a note or at least called."
"Mom!" I yell.
"Dad!" Ed yells.
A noise upstairs causes us to jump. It sounded like something being dropped. They were here or somebody had broken in.
"Ed," I say worriedly. "Let's go outside and call them."
"Shh!" Ed yells at me. His phone is to his ear. I hear the ringing on the other side. Then we both pale as we hear mom's familiar ringtone ring loudly upstairs. My heart races wildly when the phone stops ringing after one ring. Someone is upstairs.
Ed looks at me, his eyes wide with fear as he drops his hand to his side. Mom's voicemail plays on from his phone.
"This is Catherine Smith. I can't get to the phone right now! Please leave a mes-" I don't hear the rest because Ed pushes the end button. We look at each other. Ed motions to the door. I nod scared.
We quickly drop our stuff, noisily and race to the door. Ed opens the front door widely. We look back as we run foreword not paying attention. We both run into something-or someone.
"Where do you two think you're going?" A gruffly male voice asks.
Me and Ed look up and standing in front of us are two men dressed in black. Masks covering their faces. They both chuckle at our scared and panicked faces.
"I want the pretty girl." One says.
"No! I want her!" The other bickers back.
"Stay away from her!" Ed shouts as her places himself in front of me.
"Ed!" I say scared.
"Elizabeth! Edward! My favorite niece and nephew!" We hear a familiar voice shout out behind us.
We turn in fear and relief when we see Kevin Richards, dad's vice president and second owner of Smith Corps. at the top of the stairs. He was like a uncle to us. He's smiling down at us. Hands in his pockets. His dirty blonde hair combed over. He's wearing a suit. The jacket is buttoned up. He smiles at us and opens his arms to us. We run towards him, away from the men at the door.
He hugs us tightly against him. "Hey guys! Did my friends scare you?" He asks. Me and Ed look at each other. We slowly drop our hands from Kevin. We look at him in horror and he begins laughing.
"What's wrong, guys? Come on! Show Uncle Kevin some love!" We shake our heads in disbelief. The men behind us chuckle.
"Where's our parents!" Ed yells below the stairs.
