Chapter Six
"Where are we going?" Matthew says for the third time at the red light. I don't answer. I just stare at the light, revving the engine. A horn to the right of us beeps.
We both look to our right, Matthew pushes the button down for the window to go down. A young college guy, the typical rich blond jock with a big ego, in a red ferri is next to us.
"Hey, babe. Wanna race?" He yells over the engine, and sends me a wink. I smirk and push on the gas, the engine purrs, revving at the challenge.
"Here to that sign." I nod to the sign only twenty feet from us. He nods, "You're on."
"Dude!" The other blonde next us examines. He knows he's going to lose, so do I. Guys will be guys.
"What are you doing!" Matthew shrieks. His eyes are wide, he's looking at me and the smirking jock. I look away, and Matthew rolls up the window and clutches the door handle.
"Hold on." I say and the light turns green. We speed off, the jock is behind by a inch, I take a quick glance in the mirror and smirk. His face is red and the guy next to him is laughing, making him more angry.
The yellow sign is nearing and the jock doesn't even have a chance at passing us. He's so fair behind, I slow just a little for him to barely catch up. He's close, but I beat him and pass the sign. I stop at the light. I slow down to the speed limit and he glares at us as he speeds by. He isn't paying attention to up ahead when he goes by, because as he speeds on, way pass the speed limit, a cops lights go on.
"Wow." Matthew says, I don't know if he's talking about me and the race or the scene in front of us, as the cop pulls the guy and his friend over.
I shrug and make a turn to the left. Coming into view are restaurant, a mall, clothing stores, one grocery store, Starbucks and a furniture store.
"Are you taking me to dinner?" He says, he's looking at me, "You don't have to, I mean, if you want, but isn't that a guys job?"
I pull in to the Starbucks drive thru. He looks confused, looking at me still, then the shop. He's thinking, I notice the wrinkle in his forehead when he's thinking, it's adorable.
'No. Stop. Look away. Don't get attached.'
"We're going to need coffee for what we're going to do after this." I say.
"You mean," He gestures something as I pull up to the order booth. I look at him. He looks nervous and out of place. I laugh at him. He just looks at me still confused.
"I mean if that's your thing, I don't know you or what your up for and all." He says quickly. I just continue laughing at him when the bored voice comes from the ordering box.
"Hi, welcome to Starbucks, what can I get you?" The guy at the end asks.
"May I get a large ice mocha and a dark chocolate brownie," I say, I look at Matthew, he's looking at me.
"I don't want anything." he says.
"Make that two ice mocha's and brownies, please." I say.
"I didn't want anything!" Matthew says. I ignore him.
"That'll be ten fifty. Please pull up the second window, thank you."
"I didn't want anything." Matthew says again.
"Maybe it was all for me."
"Two large ice mocha's and two brownies? You expect me to believe that?" he says.
"If you want." I say. I pull up the window, it opens and the teen standing there takes the ten dollar bill and quarters. After five minutes, he brings my order.
"Have a great day." His voice like a monotone robot.
"Thanks." I say, and drive off. I pull up to the furniture store lot. I hand Matthew the second mocha and a brownie.
"I don't want it." he says, holding the coffee and brownie. He looks at the drink weirdly and the brownie in the bag. The drink moves and spills out a little. His eyes widen as if a toxic chemical just touched him, and that's when I realized what was wrong.
"You've never had Starbucks, have you!" I practically yell. He looks at me quickly wide eyed before he looks away. I start laughing again.
"It's not funny."
"What did you drink to stay awake!" I ask as I continue laughing.
"Energy drinks."
"Wow." I say, and he just looks out the window. The drink in his lap and the brownie in his hands.
"Matthew." I say softly. He doesn't look at me.
"Matthew." I say again. He still doesn't look at me, I lightly touch his shoulder and he flinches.
"What?" He says hurt. I try to hold back my laugh and smile, he's hurt over coffee.
"I'm sorry."
"It doesn't matter."
"Try it." I say happily.
"No."
"Matthew."
"Nope."
"Please."
"No."
"Fine." I say. He turns slightly and looks at me. His eyebrow is raised and once again, he's confused.
"What?" he says. I don't answer him, I just stare out in front of us, smiling.
"What!" He yells worried.
"That's not fair." he says as he jabs me in the arm.
"Nicole." He says softly, his voice getting to me. I fight the feelings, I can't give in, he will.
"Fine!" He sighs out and he brings the drink to his lips. I watch from the corner of my eye. He moves it around, the ice makes a noise. He holds it back, eyeing the straw and the drink. He closes his eyes and brings the straw to his lips and takes a drink. I face him now and watch. His eyes open and he let's out a moan.
Shocks go through me at the sound. I rub my hands together to forget, I look away from him slurping the drink down. He can't and won't affect me. I'm only here for one thing.
"This is so amazing!" He says after a minute of drinking, before he's taking another drink.
"Try the brownie." I say, he stops drinking and looks at the brownie in his lap.
"Maybe a bite." He say, as he puts down the drink and begins unwrapping the small snack.
"Once you try it, I doubt it'll be just a bite." I say.
"Oh, god!" He groans out, shocks go through me again. "This is even better!" And he takes more bites. Pretty soon he's finished.
"That was great." he says, "This is all great. Thanks for getting me addicted." he says with a smile.
"Glad I turned you into a caffeine addict." I say. "Ready?" I say.
"Oh, god. Now where? Are you trying to make me fat or addicted to everything?" He asks smiling, we get out with our drinks.
"Nope, sorry. This part is much more boring."
"Furniture?" He asks, looking at the store in front of us.
"Yeah. New house and all. I needed him picking things out and you seemed helpful and handy." I say, shrugging as we walk to the store.
"I've never been taken on a date to a furniture store before." He says and lets a little laugh.
"There's a first for everything." I say, sending back a smile.
"Touché." he says, he holds open the door for me.
The cool air hits us as soon as we walk in, the store is full of furniture. Beds, couches, tables, even appliances, align the gigantic room. A man walks up to us, I read his name tag, Larry.
"Hello, can I help y'all?" He says, his hands behind his back, looking at us excitedly.
"Just looking for furniture for the new house." I say, with a smile.
"Ah, let me guess," he looks at me and Matthew happily. "The newly wed just brought a home?"
My eyes go wide and I'm about to correct him but Matthew beats me to it.
"Yes. Me and my wife are expecting our first child together, and we need to furnish are house." He says happily. I stare at him, angrily. What is he doing! The sales man looks at my stomach and then at both of us with a smile.
"Congrats! Well if there's anything I can help you with, just give me a shout!" He says, and walks off the costumer waving him down next to us.
I wait until he leaves before I elbow Matthew. He groans and clutches his side. I made sure to make it soft enough that I didn't have to help him off his knees.
"What was that for!" He groans out.
"Newly weds, Matthew! What the hell!" I whisper angrily.
"Jeez! I was messing around! Besides, why ruin his guess!" he whispers out, he's rubbing his side.
I elbow him harder and he groans loudly and falls on his knees, I walk off and leave him practically laying on the ground. Maybe Larry can make a guess on why he's on the floor.
I walk to the back where there's mattresses and bed frames. I spot a dark cherry red bed frame near the back, and I walk closer to it. I know before I even see the beds design that I want it. Swirls and tiny stars are the pattern on the head board. They even swirl along the legs and the sides.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" I look back, and Larry is standing next to me, gazing at the bed frame.
"Yeah." I say, "It's perfect."
"I forgot to give you and your husband these," he says, he's holding a little scanner gun. "Anything you want, just scan the tag." He shows me the tag on the back of the head board.
"Push the trigger once to scan it, it'll add on the your purchase list. Anything you don't want or accidentally scan, just push the red cancel button to the side, okay?" He says, as he hands me a scanner, I nod.
"Thanks." I say.
"You're welcome, hon." He says and walks off to the front.
"Don't I get a say in our furniture for out new home?"
"No." I say, as I scan the tag on the bed frame, ignoring Matthew.
"Not fair!" He cries like a child.
"Sometimes life isn't fair." I say quietly.
"What?" Matthew says.
"Nothing. Come on."

"But I like this one!"
"I don't care what you like."
"You asked for my opinion!" Matthew states.
We've been standing at the dining table section for the past twenty minutes fighting over table choices. I wanted a simple, black table with black leather chairs. He wanted me to go for the light round peach table with a glass center. The chairs were wooden and had a striped pattern along the handles and legs.
"Black is better." I say.
"It'll darken the room." he says, "Go for this one." he points the table set next the one I want.
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Peach is the new black!"
"Black is the same black. I'm choosing this one." I say and go to scan it, Matthew hits my arm and the scanner goes flying in front of us and lands on a table a foot away.
Matthew looks at me, I look at him. He looks nervous but determined. He lightly pushes me and runs through the rows of tables for the scanner, I focus and run through the other side. As he nears it, I push a table from in front of him into his way. He crashes into the table and I manage to run and grab the scanner before him. I laugh at the angry him as he pushes the table back into place.
"I win."
"That's not fair." He says as we walk back to the tables. "You cheated!"
"Black is the winner still."
"No!"
"Guys! What's the problem here?" Larry says, a few feet from us.
"Lets ask Larry for his opinion then." I say, "Don't tell him which one was yours and mine."
"Fine." Matthew says, he folds his arms across his chest and we stand by the tables as Larry comes nearer.
"Larry, we need your opinion." I say. He nods for me to continue. "I'll make it simple, this one," I point to the black set," or this one,"I point the other set.
"That one." He says, and he points to the one I want. I smirk at the mad Matthew.
"Thank you, Larry." I say.
"No problem. Are y'all finished here? We close in thirty minutes." he states.
"We've been here that long!" Matthew yells. We got here at twelve, the store closes at six.
"If you didn't start a fight over a table." I say.
"Me! You have awful furniture choice!" He says. I ignore him.
"We're done here, Larry." I say.
"Follow me up front and I'll ring you up." he say, Matthew follows Larry as I go to scan the black table set. I look behind me. Matthew is walking with Larry, their talking. I turn back and quickly scan the peach set.

"Your total will be $10,856.65" Larry says, Matthew gaps next to me. I slide my card through the machine. Larry rings it through.
"So everything is ready," Larry says, as he hands me the long receipt. "We can hold it, without charge, or we can have it delivered to your house."
"I'll have it delivered to the house." I say, putting away the receipt and card.
"Okay, if you'll just fill out this delivery card." He says and hand me a sheet.
"Everything will be delivered to you tomorrow afternoon, is that okay?" Larry asks. As I hand him the paper.
"Perfect. Thank you, Larry." I say.
"You're welcome. Have a good night! Congrats, y'all."
We wave at him as we exit the store to the car, which is the only one parked in the lot now. It's nearly dark, except for the lights all around.
"Dinner?" I ask, as we get inside the car.
"Sure." Matthew says, next to me, buckling his seat belt.
"Where to?" I say, turning on the car and the heater.
"Your choice." He says.
"Please tell me you've been to a restaurant before." I say, looking at him, he looks out the window instead.
"No way." I say.
"My parents weren't exactly the let's eat out or go out for coffee type." He says.
"But you could of gone yourself." I say.
"You don't know how it was." he says quietly. I look away. I guess I'm not the only one with the shady past.
"I'll take you somewhere that will make you fall in love." I say happily and I shift into drive.

"Where are we now?" He says, as he looks at the red and yellow gleaming sign above.
"McDonalds." I say, "You'll love it. I promise." I pull up the menu.
"Want to choose something?" I ask, he looks at the menu for a minute, then shakes his head.
"Order for me."
"Hi, what can I get you?" The girl says through the intercom.
"Can I get two twenty piece chicken nuggets and sweet teas, please?" I say.
"What size?"
"Large."
"Okay, is that all for you?"
"Yes."
"That'll be $15.45"
I pull up the the window and wait to pay.
"Here." Matthew says, he's holding out a twenty dollar bill. I look at him, confused.
"What?"
"I want to pay."
"No."
"Come on, you just spent almost eleven thousand today. I want to pay."
"Nope." I say, looking at the window, the cashier is opening.
"Hi, two twenty piece chicken nuggets and sweet teas?" she says. I nod. "Your total is $15.45"
I'm taken back by surprise when Matthew holds me back with his left arm and leans forward to the cashier and tries to hand her the twenty.
"No!" I say and I try to shove him back. The girl just looks at me then Matthew, and the money.
"Matthew!"
"Don't listen to her, here you go. Thanks and keep the change." He says quickly, she looks at me worried before she reaches for the bill. Matthew sits back with a smirk on his face. I pull up the next window and wait for our order.
"You didn't learn at the store did you?" I say, I'll wipe that smirk off his face.
He looks confused then horrified before I punch him in his side. He groans loudly.
"Why!" He manages to whisper out.
"Stop!" he yells out when I go for another hit, "Jesus! You hit like a guy!"
"Want another one?" I threaten.
"No!"
"Excuse me." A voice interrupts to my left, another girl is standing at the window holding our order. She's looking at me and Matthew, worried too.
"Sorry." I say, I get the bag from her, and shove it to Matthew.
"Stop abusing me! Not in front of a innocent girl!" Matthew cries out. I glare at him angrily, he smirks, the girl at the window can't see him though. I look back at her, for the drinks, she's looking at me concerned.
"He's a actor. He's practicing his lines for his play next week. He's the gay stripper." I say to the girl and add in a smile for affect. I hear Matthew gasp and begin to protest. She relaxes, "Have a good night." she says in a tiny voice. I hurry and drive off.
"Gay stripper!"
"Oops."
"Oops? That's all! How will I ever show my face again?" I laugh at him and I drive to the local park.
"Where are we going now?"
"I'm taking you to the woods far out from here so I can murder you, where nobody will hear."
I take a look at him and he looks at me horrified and scared. I laugh at his face and he seems to relax when he notices I'm just kidding.
"I thought you were serious there for a minute." he says
"Uh huh." I say, I pull into the side.
"A park?" he says.
"Yeah. Come on." I say, I grab the drinks and get out.
I walk to a table near the playground. I set down the drinks and take a seat as I wait for Matthew. I look towards the car. He's not there.
'Matthew?'
"Boo."
I almost punch him in the stomach. He's right near my ear, and I feel his breath on my neck. I'm frozen in my seat, he doesn't bother moving either, I still feel him behind me. Part of me wants to lean back, just a little.
"I could of hit you." I say, breaking the silence. He sighs from behind me and comes to sit in front of me.
"You could of, but you didn't."
"I should of." I say.
"Uh, here, I don't know what to do." He says and hands me the bag. I open it and hand him nuggets and fries.
"Honey?" I ask, and I realize my slip.
"You can drop the act, Larry isn't around." Matthew says with a smirk.
I don't answer back, as I get my food out and open the honey. Matthew let's out a small groan as he bites into a nugget.
"You have amazing food choices." he says, and continues to devour the nugget. I dip my nugget into the honey. I chew and I go for another dip before Matthew's hand shoots out and he dips his nugget in, not once but three times. I look at him in shock.
"What?" he says, as if he didn't just do what he did.
"You just third dipped into my honey!"
He shrugs, reaches over, grabs the little container of honey, takes another nugget, and looks at me first. When he sees that I'm watching, he dips his nugget in, once, twice, three times, and the entire time, he's smiling about it as I watch him with my mouth open, in shock. He eats the entire thing in one bite.
"Oh no you didn't." I say angrily. He just messed up.
"Oops?" he copies my line.
"Oh, I'll show you oops." I say in a low deadly voice. He looks at me with wide eyes.
"No." He says, and shakes his head as I get up.
He scrambles out of the seat and runs towards the playground. I run right behind him. He climbs the stairs to the jungle gym set, and stands at the top looking down at me. I stand and wait for his next move.
"Please. I'm sorry? Lets drop this and go back and eat." he says.
"Promise?" he says.
"I promise." I say with a smile, I put my right hand behind me and cross my fingers. He looks at me, before he slowly walks down the stairs, he's near the bottom before, I pull my hand from behind me and show him my crossed fingers.
"Ah! No!" he says, and I leap up the one step behind him and run after him. He turns left and runs for the slide. He goes down and I go behind him.
"Please! Stop! I said sorry! Don't hurt me!" he says as he runs off the slide and through the sand, he won't have nowhere to go because up a head is just a field of grass.
I run quicker behind him, he looks behind him and his eyes go wide as he realizes I'm right behind him. I smile, he should of learned. He nearly trips over a dip in the grass, which causes him to slow down. I take the opportunity to jump onto his back, and I thought he'd be able to hold us both up, but I'm wrong as he falls to the floor, I close my eyes last minute, waiting for the fall.
"Ow!" He shrieks out.
I groan, my hand smashed under something heavy and soft. I open my eyes, I'm on top of Matthew, his head is on my hand, my face is a inch away from his. He groans and slowly opens his eyes. His brown eyes look into mine. We're both breathing quickly from running around.
He brings up his right hand, and places it on my cheek, I lean into it. He lifts his head up, I move closer, closing the distance between us. His lips meet mine. The pain from only a minute ago, quickly goes away and is replaced by a cloudy feeling. His hand on my cheek, goes into my hair and pulls me closer, the hand his head was on, wraps around his neck. I run both my hands through his hair, and pull him closer.
We pull away for air, before I yank his head towards me again. Connecting our lips together. I tug at his hair and he groans under my lips. I bite his lip and he moans and I take the chance and our tongues meet. The kiss, it isn't like fireworks, or sparks, it's like heat running throughout your body when your cold. It was perfect. I pull away for air, and he takes a breath before he moves my hair to the side and begins kissing a path from my collarbone to my ear.
I don't even realize how we ended up in a sitting position, Matthew is sitting up, and I'm in his lap. I can't think about it right now. Not with his lips on my neck. I pull him closer by his hair as he moans against my neck.
"Nicole." He moans out, he pulls me down against him by the hips. My eyes shoot open.
'I shouldn't be doing this. I can't do this. I'm only here for one thing, I can't risk falling in love'
"Matthew." I try to say in a normal voice, but it comes out huskily.
"Mm?" He says against my neck.
"We need to stop." I say with regret.
He stops, I hear him sigh in my neck. He's resting his head on my shoulder. I hear his uneven breathing, I feel his out of control heart rate.
"Okay." He says, I release his hair and get up slowly. Which only made things worse, because I ended up rubbing against him, and he let's out a loud moan. He pulls me back and crushes his lips to mine.
'Dammit'
I pull away for the second time. "Matthew." I pant out.
"Okay." He shutters out in a low voice.
This time I hurry and get up without touching him, I hold out t hand for him, he grabs it and I'm yanked into his chest. Our eyes meet and I feel drawn into him again. He moves closer until our noses touch. He looks at my lips, then my eyes. I close my eyes as he gets closer. I hear him laugh, and I quickly open my eyes. He's looking at me with a smile. He tricked me. He kisses my forehead, and takes my hand, and we walk together to the table.
_____________________________
We're sitting in my warm car, waiting outside his house. It's tiny compared to mine. It's In the city, and every house in the row looks alike.
"Thanks, for everything." I say. My hands are shaking, which is a first, I knot them together so he won't notice.
"Me? What about you? You showed me another world of food! Amazing food." he laughs.
"Ye-"
"Can I get your number?" He looks at me as he says quickly.
"I don't have my phone on me, plus I don't remember my number," I lie. I regret it so badly.
'Its for the best'
"Oh." He says sadly, before he smiles and nearly jumps up. "I'll give you mine!"
I smile lightly. "Sure."
"Here's my number," he scribbles a number onto the McDonalds napkin. "Call me, anytime, all the time, I don't care, just call, okay?"
He looks into my eyes, and the emotions I see in them, they make me want to tell him everything. Run away with him and just forget this whole plan. I can't. This is for them.
"Alright." I whisper out softly. He leans forward in the seat and places a kiss on my head before he moves back, smiles, and gets out.
I watch him walk up to the small house, unlock the door and get in. He turns for a minute, blows me a kiss, and waves. I smile sadly and shift into drive. He can't see me because of the tinted windows. And it's a good thing I added them, because then he would of seen the tears that fell.
