The Day Withers Away

Midnight poem

I found you when you were lost
In a web of deceit and lies
Caught up in the trap of a world
That never treated you right
And you thought l was the same
That l would stab your back until there was nothing else to stab
And l guess you were right
I could have broken your broken heart
I could have extinguished whatever light was inside
And left my darkness there to dominate
But l didn't
I loved you for so many reasons
Some of them l could never understand
And, slowly, in your complicated way, you loved me back
And l pulled you out of that web
And l led you by the hand to firm ground
And l treasured your heart
And pieced all those pieces together that someone else had crushed

But now you've broken mine
And l want to believe that its alright
That life is a bloody wheel and it will come back around
But l don't want to hurt you
I don't want to smash the vessel l fixed
So goodbye
Pray that l don't look at you and change my mind
