The sun has only just reached over the horizon as we pack all our bags back into the car. The clouds are a light shade of blue and purple and the air is still chilly, mist setting onto everything it can reach. Louis said that it would be best to move out now and get away quick. He discovered that Harry must've tracked my phone, which is now at the bottom of a pond. With Amber's back wrapped in bandages and shivery breaths coming from all three of us, we bid farewell to Liam and Amelia, thanking them for their company. As we're pulling down the road again, I see Amelia burst into tears, turning into Liam's chest, where he holds her close. I don't know what's to come for them, but I just hope that they'll be okay.I glance at Louis, who's driving, his face full of worry and concern. He meets my eyes for a second but then looks away again, focusing on the road, shaking his head. Amber is asleep in the back again, curled up in a little bandaged ball. It may seem like I don't care for her enough, the way I just get over things straight away and keep going and going, but living in a world like this, you can't stop for anything. I give her the most attention I can as an 18 year old, which is hard in the first place.
"I should've seen it coming." Louis speaks up, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and sighing. Deep and dense forest surrounds us, flashes of the sun that beam through the trees hitting my face every couple of seconds. I don't know where we are, or how long we've been driving for, but I do know that it's in the afternoon now, nearing closer to the night again. "He's smart, I'll give him that."
I turn my body around in the seat to fully face Louis. "Why won't you tell me?" I ask for what seems like the hundredth time. I understand that whatever he's hiding may be scary or too much for me to handle, but it would be better that I knew what was out there so I could be prepared. I do know what's out there, I've seen it, I just don't know exactly what Louis is talking about, or what it has to do with Harry.
He doesn't answer me, which is expected, and keeps driving, his eyes focused on the road. I sigh and lean back into my seat, closing my eyes and feeling the sun dancing on my face. I jolt back up when the tires of my car squeak against the road, the vehicle pulling to a halt. Louis is staring ahead at something I can't see, not taking his eyes off it. He points ahead, and I strain my eyes to see what he's looking at. Up ahead, in the road, there seems to be an enormous burn across it. The tar has melted, in a straight line, right across where we need to drive. I look, puzzled at Louis, who looks scared beyond belief.
"What-"
Louis shushes me, turning the car around and driving the way we came, looking in the rear-view mirror every two seconds. Finally, when we are far enough away from the spot, he talks.
"It was the devil."
"The what?" I question.
"The devil. Seriously? It shouldn't surprise you. There are demons - and angels -, and there needs to be an origin for those beasties. Ever heard of hell? It's just a kind of myth, but it would make a lot of sense if it was real. I've seen a few glimpses of the devil myself, a while back. And that Scarlett, was his mark. He walked there, right across that road." Louis turns a corner, leaving me completely shocked. I check on Amber to see that she is still asleep, which she is.
"Why couldn't we drive across it?" I whisper, leaning in more to Louis.
"Because, once you've crossed where the devils been, you can't un-cross it. It's like once you've stepped where he's stepped - or she, you know - it's like the devil has your trace." He pulls into another road, which looks like a back way to where we were first headed. "You'll forever be followed and known by the devil after that, and trust me, that is not something you want."
