"if I get 600 reads I'll update sooner"
*little white lies plays in background*

"What was that?" Lou's face turns as white as a sheet, looking slightly out the window. I listen closely, my heart starting to pump wildly in my chest. I can't hear anything over the sound of my own pulse in my ears, my hands starting to shake. It's silent for a moment, and I think that maybe Lou may be hearing things, but that's only until I hear the low whispering noises coming from outside the door, followed by the scraping of nails across the side of the house.

Nobody breathes or makes a sound, we're all helpless, without any weapons of any kind to kill the creature outside. Guns won't work, that's already been figured out, but I do as Lou says anyway when she pulls out her handgun, gesturing us to duck underneath the table. Louis and I do as she says, as silently as we can. I can't hear anything but the thumping sound of our own heartbeats at the moment, blood rushing to our heads and making it difficult to hear anything else.

Lou takes a shaky breathe. "Scarlett, go as quietly as you can up the stairs and get the girls." She whispers, nodding at me. "Louis, there's a gun over next to the front door - behind the shoe rack. If you think you can get it, then do so, although the I can't guarantee it's going to help you." She takes another shaky breath, crouching on her feet, ready to strike. "Hubby's home."

I swallow spit - hard. I nod once, creeping along the floor from under the table. I silently pray that I don't step on a creaky plank of wood, and as a crawl along the cold ground my prayers are answered. I reach the stairs, turning back one final time to see Louis give me a half hearted thumbs up, then continue to creep through the house, facing the most dangerous part of this mission - going up the stairs. Lou silently urges me to hurry up, and so I start to creep us the stairs on my hands and knees, one step at a time.

By the time I reach the top of the stairs sweat is almost dripping off my face and my heart is beating wildly, but relief washes over me as I realise that I've made it. I quickly scramble around the doors each side of the hallway, opening and checking every one of them, desperately searching for Lux and Amber. I come to the last door of the hallway, turning it slowly and poking my head around the corner of the door to find Lux and Amber sitting and holding each other, tears pouring out of their eyes.

"Shh, it's alright." I lie, rushing to the side of the bed, engulfing both of them in my arms.

"What's going on? Is daddy back?" Lux sobs, clutching onto my shirt. I gulp, holding both of them closer to me.

"Listen girls, I need you two to be brave and stay with me, we need to get out-" I am interrupted by an ear piercing scream and the deafening shot of a gun, followed by glass smashing. All of the blood in my body drains from me as I hear more gun shots being fired followed by the unearthly howl of a monster.
"We need to go - now." I haul the girls up and put my arms over them to protect them, running quickly along the hallway. There's no use being quiet now, the noises from downstairs and Lux and Ambers sobbing fills my ears, as well as my own pulse thumping in my ears.

I wasn't prepared for the sight I saw when I reached the top of the stairs, to say the least. A blood curdling scream erupts from someone, but the demon standing before us takes no notice. The tall black figure can hardly fit under the roof, what looks like blood dripping from its limbs. It's long, black nails scrape the wooden flooring and walls and its beady black eyes gleam with madness. It's only when the creature opens its mouth to show off an impressively scary set of teeth do I realise where the screaming was coming from. A human scream, coming from the demons mouth. That's not the scariest part though.

Low, deep whispers, sending chills down my spine and causing the hair on my arms to stick up. It creeps along the ground towards Lou, who looks as helpless as ever, whispering again and again.

"Where's the girl, Lou? Where is she? Tell me Lou, don't you love me?"

Lou turns to look me in the eyes, more fear than I have ever seen etched on her face. Louis stands behind her, a gun shaking in his small hands. I look back at Lou, and she mouths one word to me, but it's only one word that I need.

Run.

The demon snaps its head sideways to face us, a devilish smile spreading across its face. It takes me two seconds to realise what's happening, the demon climbing on all fours up the stairs. I push the girls in front of me and run down the hallway, helplessly running and having nowhere to go. Except for a window. My adrenaline is rushing and I go over my options - one: hide in one of the rooms until the demon comes and kills us, or two: jump out the window and hope for the best.

I come to a halt at the window, glancing back at me to see the demon squeezing through the small hallway. I look out the window, seeing that it's not really that high off the ground - well, I don't think I'm going to die by jumping out - and I kick the window with all my strength, causing it to shatter and break.

"Hold onto me!" I yell, earning nods from Lux and Amber, who climb onto my back and side quickly. I take a deep breath, looking one final time out the window - which seems much higher now - and behind me, the demon still smiling. I close my eyes for a second and build up all my courage, leaping out of the window.

It's like everything is going in slow motion, the air wrapping around me as I fall, all oxygen leaving my body. The ground is getting closer and closer, and I feel the girls wrap tighter around me, preparing to crash land. I bend my knees, coming into contact with the ground, everything around me going out of slow motion. A pain rockets up my legs and spine, causing me to do a couple of forward rolls in the grass. I groan in pain, scrunching my eyes up and letting out a strangled gasp.

"Lettie! Please!" Amber pulls on my arms, trying to heave me up. I crawl up from the ground, Lux and Amber helping me up, but it isn't working very well. My legs collapse on me and another pain shoots up my back, tears now pouring down my face. I swallow back hard and try again, putting most of my weight on the two girls. I can hear the demon screeching from behind us, still in the house, but getting closer. I push all the pain in my legs and back behind me, scampering quickly away from the house, into the dark woods.

We run as fast as we can away from the house, my legs slowing us down a bit. I bite back the screams of pain that I need to let out, putting Lux and Amber before me. I can't see anything in these woods apart from the outline of the leaves, the bright moon only reaching to the top of the forest. We run for what feels like hours, not sure of where we're going, just knowing that we have to get as far away from the house as we can.

"Lettie, I can't go any further." Amber limps beside me, her shaky legs covered in mud and her eyes still red and puffy. I nod, agreeing with her. I can't go any further either, but we can't stop in the middle of the woods, it's not safe.

"I think we've lost the demon, but it's still not safe out here." I reply, leaning against a tree. Lux still hasn't spoken a word since we escaped the house, her eyes not leaving her feet.

"My daddy's a demon?" She mumbles, fumbling with her hands. I go to open my mouth and reply, but the snapping of a branch nearby silences me. I fill with fear once more, grabbing the girls and curling up next to the tree, covering my mouth and praying that it was just a rabbit. The leaves crunch again, and again. I hold the girls closer to me, my heart beating irregularly fast. A figure steps out of the shadows, and my breathing stops, expecting the worst.

"Lux?"
