The day felt weird. The house looked too empty, the car seemed a little bit too clean. I don't know if it was the sun that had barely shown it's shine, or if it was the cold wind, that pushed my hair back as I observed the city passing by through the window of Sam's car.
Maybe both.
"Are you okay?" I hear Nat's voice coming from beside me.
"Yeah." I look at her "I just have a feeling"
"What feeling?"
"I don't know" I turn to look at the buildings once again "Just a feeling"
She accepted the answer and got on her phone. The other two guys, Steve and Sam, continued their talk at the front seats.
Everything was ready to ambush Sitwell. Sam was going to call him, threaten him and get him in the car. After that, Nat, Steve and I were going to pressure him to talk about HIDRA's infiltration at SHIELD. Sounds simple and easy to me. Then why do I feel weird? Something is wrong and I can't get my finger around it.
As soon as we got to the top of the building with Agent Sitwell, Steve started to question him.
"Tell me about Zola's algorithm." Steve says pushing the Agent to the ground.
"I've never heard of it" He says.
"What were you doing in the Lemurian Star?" Steve continues.
"I was throwing up, I was sea sick"
Steve catches him as he is about to fall off the building.
"Is this little display meant to insinuate that you are gonna throw me off the roof?" Sitwell asks "Cuz it's really not your style, Rogers"
"You're right" I respond "Its not his, it's hers."
Natasha then pushes him off the roof, hearing his screams and cries, counting the seconds before Sam catches him.
"Wait. What about the girl from Accounting, Laura..." She says to Steve.
"Lillian. Lip piercing, right?" He says
"Yeah, she's cute"
"Yeah, I'm not ready for that."
This strange obsession Natasha has for finding Steve a girlfriend is somehow getting on my nerves. The thought of him dating is weirdly not appealing to me.
A second later Sam appears flying above our heads and drops Sitwell on the floor. He shuts his wing suit and joins us as soon as his feet touches the ground.
"Zola's algorithm is a program!" The Agent tells us before we say anything "For choosing Insight's targets."
"What targets?" Steve asks.
"You, A TV anchor in Cairo, the Under Secretary of Defense, a high school Valedictorian in Iowa City, Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange" He looks at me "Her, specially her. Anyone who's a threat to HYDRA. Now or in the future."
"In the future? How could it know?" Sitwell laughs at Steve.
"How could it not? The 21st century is a digital book. Zola taught HYDRA how to read it. Your back records, medical history, voting patterns, emails, phone calls, your damn SAT scores! Zola's algorithm evaluates people's past to predict their future."
"And what then?"
"Then the helicarriers scratch people off the list. A few million at a time."
"Steve, we need to get into S.H.I.E.L.D." Nat says "Before they get these helicarriers out"
We get down from the building and get to the car. As we drive in SHIELD's direction I get that strange feeling again; the feeling that something is wrong, like a blurred signal.
