"Daily life of Emily"
The sun rises from the East breaking the snow and mist, little birds flying here and there whistling, the sunshine penetrates through the glass and reaches the bed of the little girl by the window. She turns around and covers here eyes with a blanket to avoid the sunlight. Then she is wakened by a voice she hears every sunrise, the rooster's, cock-a-doodle-doo. She moans and gets up out of her bed, makes her weary lazy steps to get in front of the dressing table. She rubs her messy hair with an old comb with teeth broken, the very for and last gift of her late mother. She looks herself in the mirror and sighs.. Arghhh, "Here do I have to start another day again. Where are you mother?" she says, tears start to fill up in her eyes. Then she puts her long dark curly hair in a ponytail. She tightens her belt and makes her way downstairs from the old wooden winder stairs. Emily is the lowly maid who has to work at the mayor's mansion. The mayor and his wife show too much generosity and kindness to the citizens but have no mercy upon her. She would have to wear old clothes and eat only low-quality rice and leftovers. She only has three old outfits to wear, a blue dress torn at the edges, an old-fashioned blouse, a skirt and a pair of jumpers. She goes to the kitchen and starts making fire, during which she had sometimes experienced choke ups and couldn't breathe anymore as she is provided only with low-priced old charcoal soaked with water to cook with. She fills up water in the kettle and places it on the fire. When it is boiling, she goes out to the farmyard to feed the animals from which she is able to begin her day in a small pleasure. She returns and prepares breakfast for her master and dame. She has to shop at the market and returns before they wake, running, carrying loads of heavy bags filled with gourmet which she has never tasted of. When she arrives she starts cooking for the lunch again, and do the washing. Sometimes she gets scolded for being lazy and not doing house chores. Only after these tasks she could take a bathe. She then sets out to prepare dinner again. She has to message her dame and brings her everything she needs at the end of her speech or she gets beaten. She has to cleanse every corner of the house from lounge to the cell at the weekend too. She used to weep a lot when she first arrived at the house but now she get used to it. Only after have all the things done, she could take a rest. It is even less than five hours if her leisure times are added up except her sleeping time. After she has finished all her work, she throws her tired, exhausted and over-worked body to her bed, lies down and sleeps soundly, meeting a prince who would save her from this in her dream.
