Welcome to New York City

Friday, June 12th 2004

Hi I'm Selena Serrano, only 6 years old but very wise for my age. I've only been in the world for 6 years but in my 6 years I have seen and learned at lot, one thing I'll always remember in this world is that in reality I am the only person who has my back. After my parents chose drugs over me that made it pretty clear for me. My parents were very young and irresponsible, they were so caught up with drugs and crime they forgot about me which is why I'm being dumped off to my grandparents house.

I loved my grandparents, no matter what they made sure I was good. Clothes, fed and more.

They had to call my parents to make sure that I had ate that day. Sad huh? Even though as I'm growing up I've been through hell, my grandparents made sure that I still had a decent childhood. I was being moved from Philadelphia to New York City, a big difference but something I knew I needed.

As the car slowed down and stops in front of my grandparents home, I felt happier than I have ever been. I was finally out of that hell hole and where I belong. I stepped out the car, fixed my dress and looked around. Sounds of children playing on the nice summer day excited me, kids were running up and down the street just having a good time.

"Selena, awe my dear Selena!" My grandma clasped her hands together and smiled, she walked down her stairs and up to me "Look at you, you look just like your mother....it's a shame she could have been someone with her beauty but chose a addict." She whispers the last part.

"Where's grandpa?" I asked. She grabbed my bags and we walked towards the house "Out drinking with his buddies." She opens the door and the smell of blueberry pie smacked me in the face. My stomach growled and my mouth watered, I ran into the kitchen to get me a slice "Don't go filling up on desert, dinner is almost done!" She warned.

I grabbed a slice and poured myself a glass of milk. I sat at the table and finished off my pie and milk, "Can I go outside?" She looked at the clock on the wall and nodded her head. I got up and placed my dishes in the sink, ran outside and as soon as I got outside I bumped into something.

"Hey watch it!" The little boy yelled

"I'm sorry I didn't see you there." We both stood up, his face was still balled up.

"It's okay." He put out his hand "I'm Sonny, wanna play with me and cousin?"

"Yeah sure!" I grinned "I'm Selena." We shook hands.

"Well tag your it!" He tapped my shoulder and ran, of course I chased after him and tackled him. We both fell on the ground and laughed, that's how we spent the rest of that night and summer. We became best friends and did everything together, we shared our toys and even made up our own secret language.

But our friendship didn't last forever, one day Sonny didn't knock on my door. So I knocked on his but no answer, I sat on my step and waited all day but nothing, a day became a week then a month and next thing I knew I was starting school without my best friend. I grew sad and stayed to myself after that summer, what was the point of being friends with anyone if everyone just leaves my life? What happened to my best friend? Would I ever see him again?
