7: crime at the playground

"Sooo, what are you gonna do when you see him at work?" Taylor asked Delilah, dragging out the so.
"Be normal? I don't know, Tay. I'm sure he'll have questions," Delilah sighed, finishing the last swipe of mascara.
Today was only her second day of work and it was already going to be awful. She thought she'd be perfectly fine going on the date, that she wouldn't panic if he made a move. And yet, she ran away.
Delilah willed the tears forming in her eyes to go away when she looked at herself in the mirror. Today she had on a black, loose, Def Leppard shirt on that was tucked into a pair of black jeans.
To make the outfit look a little more professional, she threw on a black blazer over top of the shirt. On her feet were a pair of black loafers and the normal white lab coat was on.
"Dil, maybe you should open up to him. He seems really interested in you, y'know."
"Tay, I met him like 4 days ago. I'm not spilling my whole tragic backstory to him. Like I said, he probably just sees me as another hook up, l-like a challenge. Nothing's going to happen."
Delilah stuffed her phone in the pocket of her jeans, grabbed her bag from the living room, mumbled a goodbye to Taylor and left.
The ride to the station would've normally been relaxing and filled with music but instead it was nerve wracking and filled with energy drinks that she bought at a small bodega.
She only had two Monsters and yet her hands had a slight tremor to them. Thank God she didn't perform surgery on real people, she'd be up shits creek without a paddle.
Soon enough, Delilah pulled her car into the reserved parking spot for the ME and turned it off.
"God, Delilah, what are you going to do?" She mumbled to herself, leaning her head on the seat. She grabbed the energy drink and took another big chug before grabbing another along with her bag and making the way into the station.
It was fairly easy to navigate her way through the station, automatically finding her office.
Luckily, the station was still relatively empty and she didn't have to risk running into anyone she knew.
All Delilah wanted to do was chug her energy drinks and bury herself in her work. Sitting on her desk was some files for new bodies and autopsies she had to perform.
Before Delilah could take a seat and start to shuffle through the files, the door to her office opened revealing the same forensic scientist from earlier, Ella.
"Hey, Delilah, we have a new body downtown and we need the ME there," Ella said, cheerfully as ever. "You can take the coroner van. It's already waiting outside."
"Okay, thank you, Ella!" Delilah responded with a forced smile.
Ella left the ME's office, retreating back to her office. Delilah shuffled around the office and lab, preparing a bag of materials needed for a crime scene. After that was done, Delilah made her way out to the coroner van that was already running with Ella in the passenger's seat.
"Let's go girl!" She shouted from her window. Delilah chuckled, getting into the van and placing the bag in the back.
If only for a moment, she forgot about everything that happened with Lucifer the night before. She forgot about her past as she drove with Ella, blaring whatever music came on the radio.
Sure, they were driving to a crime scene but couldn't they have a little fun doing so?
Eventually, the pair pulled up to a small park in downtown Los Angeles with a section of the playground taped off. Police officers and forensics roamed the area, blocking Delilah's view.
She stepped out of the van and took off the blazer she had on and replaced it with the blue LAPD Coroner jacket. Ella followed the woman over to the crime scene, pulling the yellow tape over the two of them.
Delilah let out a small gasp at the sight before her. A man who looked to be around 42 had been tied up by the neck using the metal chain of a swing. All he had on was a pair of white boxers but something else stuck out to Delilah.
Both of his wrists had been contorted and obviously broken but it had been done after he was hung up and killed
Thoughts ran through her mind about the possible motives or suspects. Crazy ex? No. Never the ex. Gang-related. Downtown. Public. Broken wrists.
"Delilah!" A voice shouted from behind her, drawing her out of her thoughts. She recognized the voice immediately but said nothing.
She went to put on some gloves but was stopped when a hand met her wrist. Delilah's eyes followed the arm up to his face to reveal Lucifer standing there with wide eyes.
"Delilah, dear. Are you avoiding me?" His British accent asked.
She looked around at everyone, making sure nobody had been watching them. "No, I'm just trying to do my work."
Delilah pulled her wrist from Lucifer's grasp and snapped on the Latex gloves, moving towards the body. Ella was taking pictures with her camera while Chloe was chatting with another police officer.
"The wrists were broken after he was hung," Ella pointed out.
"I'm thinking gang-related but I'll do a toxicology test and make sure there were no other substances in his body. I don't see the need to do a full autopsy. It's pretty clear to see the cause of death," Delilah rambled out.
Lucifer watched from his spot next to Chloe and Delilah and Ella bounced around the scene. A small wave of sadness mixed with annoyance came over him at the sight of Delilah ignoring him.
He thought the date had gone perfectly. Delilah had been smiling and laughing the whole night. But then he tried to make a move and she freaked out.
Maybe she was secretly gay? Asexual? Virgin?
Lucifer's thoughts ran wild as he watched the young woman work. He would try again. Or get her to open up. He would.
That was a promise.
