Syre looked upon what had become of the castle. It was reduced to rubble, by her own hand off course. She and Plas had spent the better part of the week chasing the ash demons out of the gates, all the while saving people who showed up at the castle. It seemed that the creatures were not as active in the sunlight, so they were easier to deal with, but no weapon, or magic was able to kill the demons.
Word got out that Syre was the only remaining member of the royal family. The surviving nobles thought that she planned the whole thing, that the witch princess was the cause of the demons. For the second part of the week there were protests in the garden. Plas and Syre watched, far above floating in the sky, as the guards sheepishly tried to quell the gathering, ultimately failing in the end.
"The princess is no princess! She is a witch! No royal is a witch! We should burn her at the stake!" A noble from a land just east of the capital preached
The nobles gathered in the palace walls in the days following the monster spawning, it seemed like the safest place to be.
Plas stroked his beard.
"The demonstrations are getting bigger as more people come seeking refuge,"
Syre cocked her head back and sighed.
"To kill a wolf you have to become a hunter,"
Plas knew what she was going to do. Normally he would be the one to stop her, but now that she was in charge he couldn't and didn't want to do anything.
Syre floated down into the crowd.
The knights kneeled down in penance to her. A few nobles followed in pursuit but the rest stood with accusatory eyes.
"Which IMBECILE thinks I did something,"
Syre loved the feeling of fear coming from the crowd of men.
The young noble step forward.
"I do you wretched witch!"
There was a sudden gasp, the guards kneeling got in position to run him through. Syre motioned for the guards to stand down.
"Very well... But you do acknowledge that the men here are loyal to me? You also realized now that I have extreme magical ability?"
The noble took a step back.
"I am loyal to the king, and you killed him!"
Syre began to cackle.
"So if I did? Who will do anything, you? This crowd?" She laughed
Just then she floated him into the sky. The noble man began to scream.
"Kill the witch! You will die!" He shouted
Syre wanted to squeeze his head until it popped like a grape. But that would be a bloody mess. She thought that she should drop him from a hundred feet in the sky, then Plas spoke up from behind her
"You should strip him of his status of a noble"
Syre knew that was the right course of action. She let the man down gently. Turned and then spoke.
"I am in charge around here. I can banished each and everyone of you if I wanted, and you could try your luck with the demons!" She paused as she turned to the man behind her.
"You're lucky my teacher takes pity on you. By order of the queen you are stripped of all noble status!" The man was shocked all he could do was sit looking at the ground about to cry.
There were murmurs in the crowd as well.
"I will kill you witch!" The man yelled.
"Oh yes I almost forgot." Syre muttered quitely
She grabbed a spear from one of the guards, then suddenly the man screamed. At first it was words but then it was uncomprehensive gibberish. Then after a second a small pinkish object emerged from the man's mouth. Once it was apparent that the object was this poor man's tongue a few of the men threw up, all the while the man from whence it came fainted. The tongue floated to Syre who rammed the spear in the ground and put the tongue straight through the top of it. The young man could be heard wailing, and covering his mouth while blood was gushing out.
"Anyone else have something to say?" She yelled into the crowd "if so your tongue can join that idiot's, and you know where the door is!"
With that the crowd dispersed. The men went back to the tents that the palace guard set up for the nobles. Syre floated back into the sky. She hated everything to do with the kingdom, but she also felt a sense of responsibility to lead the people taking refuge. Her true desire was to leave a hunt the demons. The monsters were to blame for much sorrow, but it gave her a rare opportunity to change. She didn't need to take daily baths, wear fancy dresses, and never again did she need to listen to some king from another country introduce his son as a potential suitor.
"Your majest-" Syre held her hand up before Plas could finish.
"Let me get one thing straight right now. I am NOT anyone's queen. I shall put on a performance for those scrambling people out there, but you should know it's all an act. NEVER address me as such."
Plas smiled,
"Alright then now what?" He asked
Syre got deep into thought. What to do now?
"Well for starters, reinforce the stone wall..."
She had a long agenda ahead of her.
