She explained everything.
Everything about her wings.
Everything about the scientists.
She told him why she disappeared.
And he gave her his full attention. Never interrupting, just letting her go at her own pace.
When she finished, they both sat there in silence before Izaya spoke up once more.
"So....you didn't leave because you thought I would turn you in or something? Or that I would try and break you and find your secrets out myself? I do tend to take an interest in the unusual after all. Of course, no where near as much as I love my humans though." Izaya finally said, staring into Makiko's eyes for any hint of deception.
"What? No! Of course not! Izaya, you might be a prick that messes with people a lot, but you are pretty much the only person I actually hold close to me. Your my only friend, I care about you. Even though you are kinda cruel to a bunch of people, I actually trust you not to do something like that to me. I was afraid of the science guys, not you." She finished her little surprised rant, for some reason feeling a little indignant.
Izaya stared at her for a few more seconds before letting out a light chuckle and standing up. He walked over and stood in front of her, staring at her determined eyes, giving a gleeful look.
"I know, but I guess it's nice to be assured every now and then." And then he smiled.
This wiped out any irritation Makiko felt. This was why she never thought that being friends with Izaya was a mistake. Even though he could behave like a little devil, there were still these moments.
His smile was real.
Not fake.
Not condescending.
But real.
He had stopped putting a mask over every expression he had about a year or two before she had left.
It was an absolute relief to her to see that he still held trust in her. She knows that there is not a single other person he trusts as much as he does her.
She smiled back.
