"How's work?"

John was talking to Alex over the phone while peeling potatoes in the kitchen, the electronic device balanced between his ear and shoulder. John Henry was in his high chair, watching cartoons and drinking from his bottle.

"Oh it's going fine. My meeting plan didn't go so well, Dad decided to go with Reynolds and Madison's plan, all because Jefferson backed it. It was bullshit to be honest." Alex huffed into his own phone. "How was your day baby?"

John looked up from his hands and towards his son, who was making content sounds.

"Everything went great." John lied. He felt like Alex didn't need to know about Annie, it would just make him think that he was wrong for going to work. Besides, John Henry had a good day, and that made it worth it.

"I'm glad to hear that."

"Yeah, well, it was great until J needed a bath." John laughed.

Alex snorted, knowing his son despised the water. "Well, for dealing with that you deserve a drink. I think I'm gonna pick up some red on the way home, maybe stop by Herc and Lafs too if that's fine."

"Sure baby, you do that. I love you, J is getting fussy."

"Love you too." Alex sighed, hanging up.

John sat down his phone and went to pick up John Henry's toy elephant. The baby responded with a giggle, bringing a smile to John's face.

"I don't care what they think kiddo." He said to his son. "This isn't a bad thing. It's beautiful."

One Hour Later

"John?" Alex yelled into the apartment as he walked in.

John shushed him from the kitchen. "The baby's asleep! I finally got him in the crib, he wouldn't let go of me."

Alex chuckled. "He's a daddy's boy."

"That's because I have a gentle aura." John smiled. "I haven't eaten yet. Care to join me?"

"Wouldn't that be nice with some, I don't know, wine?" Alex pulled out a bottle of red from inside of his coat.

"Why did you pull that out like a dealer?" John snorted.

Alex ignored him and poured two glasses, then sat down on the couch and kicked his shoes off.

John brought over the plates, and put his legs on top of Alex's.

"Are you using my legs as a table?" John questioned.

"Your using my legs as a footstool." Alex laughed.

The couple ate and talked about their day, John leaving out almost all the details.

"I'm glad your back at work baby. Washington wouldn't choose a plan if he didn't like it. That's why they got assigned the case." John said. "I bet that he thought you had too much responsibility already, and it was your first day back."

"If that's the case then I don't appreciate the special treatment."

"When has George ever given you special treatment?" John raised his brow. "He lets you earn what you get, and you know it."

Alex groaned, knowing his husband was right. "I was worried about you all day."

"I know baby, but we were fine."

John sat up and leaned into his husbands embrace, giving him a quick peck on the lips.

"We can do this." Alex smiled. "We can be parents, and have jobs and be normal. And people like Annie can eat shit."

John backed up. "An- I'm going to murder Elizabeth Schuyler."

A Few Weeks Later

Alex was getting John Henry dressed for the day while John made breakfast.

"Baby? Can you look for my red tie?" Alex yelled from the nursery.

"It's on the dresser." John walked into the room. "Good morning J!"

John reached for John Henry, but the child kept his focus on Alex.

"Don't be scared of the nest on Daddy's head, son. It just his morning hair." Alex laughed.

John smacked his shoulder and pulled his hair up into a bun. "Very funny. I poisoned your eggs."

John took J into the kitchen, then sat him in his highchair. "You want some breakfast? I got your favorite."

John put half of a mashed banana on the chairs table, to which John Henry giggled and immediately started to eat.

Alex walked into the kitchen area, tying his tie. "Plans today?"

"Pediatrician. We're going for J's six month checkup."

"We really got this down don't we?" Alex grinned.

John snorted. "Baby, we are just getting started. Imagine when he's an edgy teenager who doesn't want to talk to us."

"Boo. Let's just talk about him now, while he's still something sweet."

"Something?" John raised a brow and handed Alex a plate.

"Someone." Alex corrected himself.

"Are you coming home for lunch?"

"Ba!" John Henry yelled, reaching for his bottle. John handed it to him as Alex replied.

"Yea, if Thomas decides his plan is shit and gives up."

"Alex!"

"Okay fine I'll come home. Oh you meant- oops "crap.""

John rolled his eyes.

Alex smiled as he thought to himself.

This was it. This was perfect. This was his family, and he was happy.  This was something special, and it was sweet.
